I worked for Transcription Express for 3 months full-time and made less than $400. They threaten you with signing a contract stating you will pay them $250 if you leave earlier than 3 months to ensure you will stay with them making $1-$2 an hour.

I tried to give notice to leave and they claimed the day I signed the contract was different than what they show (although I have a copy of the contract stating the date I signed it). I ended up losing around $200 and a lot more than that if you include the time I spent with this scam.

I am trying to get the word out to warn other stay at home moms that this is a scam. Oh and they have a good rating with the BBB and coincidentally are a member of the BBB.

#2UPDATE Employee

Sun, May 27, 2012

I have been a Transcriptionist working with Transcription Express for over 10 years now.  I am neither a family member, nor a friend of the business owners.  I am, however, a professional who takes pride in doing a good job for the company I work with, and in turning in quality work.

One thing that led to my success was that I changed my way of thinking from one of an employee to one of a business owner.  Anyone who has started a business knows that it is necessary to make investments in time, equipment, money, and blood, sweat and tears.  So, unless you're Mark Zukerberg, you have to understand that you're not going to become a millionaire overnight.

I went into this venture knowing that I would not get rich doing this job.  But it has given me the benefit of being able to be home with my family while I help put food on the table.  It also allows me to work while I travel.  As a retiree, I find that a huge benefit.

Yes, when I was an employee, I made a much higher salary than what I am making now.  But how much is time with your family worth?  For me, I find it immeasurable.

If you're not willing to invest some time, turn in quality work and make a modest investment in owning your own business, this is not for you.  Don't blame Transcription Express; this just might not be the niche for you.  It's not for everyone, but I find it very rewarding.  Terry and Darren Hurst have always been extremely honest and up front with me, and I trust them.  Otherwise, I would not have stayed around for 10 years.

Transcription Express NOT a scam, in my opinion.

I cannot confirm or deny anything about anyone else's personal experience, but I can say that my experience with Transcription Express was very different than the one I read above. First of all, this business is well established in Gilbert, AZ. They are not at all the fly-by-night type of scam you might expect from anything advertising real work at home jobs for "moms" or what have you... you actually have an office to go to, people you deal with face to face, in-house training, etc. Not the over-the-net or through the mail, send me $99 and I'll make you rich type of stuff. Second, it's true you do sign a contract as a contractor with them, but it is all very straight-forward and easy to understand. There is a fee if you leave before a certain time frame, and this is (understandably) to offset the cost of the time and resources it took to train and establish you as a transcriptionist. This is a fairly small company, doing what they have to legitmately do to make it, not the big dogs trying to take the lil guys' money. There was a decent amount of turnover that I witnessed, as this is not as easy a job as most people would think it is. Some probably get into it and realize it's actually work, and you have to work hard and transcribe a fair amount to really make any money. Keeping that in mind, I would never say this was ever meant to be the kind of job you would have to support your typical family. Keep in mind, they pay by the page.. and the going national rate is really only about $1/page or so. (To this company's credit, when I first began with them they were actually one of the highest paying transcription companies around. I understand they've dropped rates a bit, but I believe it was only to stay competetive.) Lastly, these are good people. There is no scam here, that I am aware of, and I worked for them for almost 2 years. My advice to anyone looking to work from home, or work anywhere, is to read and understand what you're signing. If you don't understand, ask questions until you do. If you still don't understand, don't sign. I don't think it's fair that folks blame companies, and potentially ruin their good name because they didn't know what they were getting into.
