Despite deregulation TXU is the one who reads and is still responsible for most meters. I left txu due to continually having usage jumps from 800kwh to sometimes over 3000 in a month then back down. they checked meter, and despite fact it is 35 yrs old, and common sense that a small house with no changes in usage, determined meter was good. Switched companies. everything fine for a few months, then again, in one month (and we were gone a week of that month), temps same average as month before, and no difference in appliances, we went from kwh of 888 to over 3500, next month back down to less then 1000. it is txu who came out and again said the meter is fine. the reading was accurate. and that they do the readings as a contract company. so here we are, in a 1000 sq ft home, all update energy efficient appliances, and only 2 adults and 1 child. having almost 500 dollar elec bills. TXU is still in control. and nothing I can do about it. my new elec company has cheaper rates, but its still txu who is in control of the readings. btw, we do have the option of getting new meter, but since txu has found nothing wrong with old one, we have to pay for meter and installation out of our own pocket. and it is very expensive.

I have been with TXU for 20 years. Then last year I was informed on the deregulation of electricity in Texas. You have the power to choose which REP you wish. There is a website powertochoose that lists all services in your zipcode. Also based on PUC investigations stear clear of TXU, Reliant, First Choice, Direct. I have heard alot of negative things. I personally had Green Mountain that not only could not get the mail into the right billing department, but could not find your payments hence electric was cut off! Jim in Dallas

I to had an issue with them, and after almost 2 years it still has not be corrected.. I moved in to my present home Nov 15 2004, and the bill for Nov 15 to Dec 3 showed I used, get this 3460 KwH... What??? so I called them and they agreed it seemed strange, so on Dec 21st they came out, the Tech messed with the meter and agreed it was messed up, he replaced it and that was that, I got my next bill (after paying 600 the month before) and from the Dec 4 to the 20th I used 4300 KwH, but from the 20 to jan 4th I only used 265 KwH... The following month I used 846 KwH... as you can see, the meter over read the usage, but they have still not credited me, they did the same thing, pay it or we turn off your power, well, could not have that, so I did, but after 2 years, and a note book full of notes, I have yet to get credit for the over payment... So, all I can tell you is good luck.. they do nothing to help you...
