Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

On December 8, 2013 I bought a "refurbished" Asus laptop with Win 8 on it. At time of purchase I asked that Win 7 be installed and back up hard disks be provided of all programs, and OS systems for future use. Mike was very good about taking care of this and called the next day to say it was ready for pick up. He showed me what he had done and provided the requested disks. Happily off I went to use my new laptop!

It worked fine for about an hour. Then it would not do anything, it just stuck, not even able to shut it off. Finely was able to shut it off and re-open to main window. Again it just got stuck. This went on for several hours, even tried using the disks to help but that did nothing either.

The next morning I took it back and told Mike what had happened. As I was not familiar with Win 7 I thought maybe i had done something wrong. Mike looked at it and had a couple glitches as well. He said he would fix it by reinstalling the programs. Later that day I picked it back up and he again showed me how to use the Win 7 program.

Again I went home excited about using it. Again it did the same thing as before, just stuck. Store was closed so I asked a compute savvy friend to come over and see if it was something I was doing or if it was the laptop. He also had major problems in even getting to the opening page. After a couple of hours there had been no progress and he suggested i take it back. I also called my brother who programs computers in Seattle what he thought was going on. After trying for an hour to help me long distsnce he also said take it back and get a refund.

I looked at the receipt and saw that the store "policy" was "repair or replace". The next day I took it back to Mike and told him this was not working properly and it ws not something I was willing to have "repaired" again. I said I was willing to exchange it for another laptop but he had nothing in the store that was ready to use. He also told me that " it was my fault the Asus did not work because I did not know how to use it"! I couldn't believe ANY store would ever say that to a customer. Shocked at being treated this way I just left with the bd Asus in hand.

Over the next several days I had my mom go in the store and see if there here any laptops Mike was trying to sell. I also sent an email outlining the same issues as before and said I was still willing to trade the Asus for another WORKING laptop, and that if none were available I felt the a full refund of my $274.00 was the best way to resolve this issue. After 3 days mom said Mike had a couple of laptops on the shelf for sale.

The next day I asked my mom and the friend who had helped me that first time to come with me to make a trade. I did not want to be bullied again and I felt that with others as witnesses Mike would follow through with the store "policy" and replace it with a functioning laptop, or refund my money.

When we got there Mike told me that he wouldn't trade the Asus for those he had on the shelf to sell. No explanation was given except to again say that I didn't know how to use Win 7 and he had "fixed" it for me. My friend said there was a problem with the computer itself and was NOT my use of a new program.

I then said that as I had tried all possible solutions well within the 30day "policy" of "repair / replace" and as Unique Thriftique was NOT willing to back up their own "policy" I felt that a complete and total refund of the purchase price in the maount of $274.00 was the only solution at that time. I was told they WOULD NOT refund my money and that they had met all store policies by "fixing" the problem and that was all there was to be done. They would not replace, or refund, and that it was my problem.

I was so angry at being ripped off and then bullied by this man that my mom took my arm and led me from the store before i lost all self control and did or said anything that would make the matter worse. Like it could get any worse.

To this day, March 2, 2015 this Asus has worked LESS than one full week! I even gave it to my computer friend again asking him to try and use the disks provided by Mike to see if something could be done to make it fuction as promised by Unique Thriftique when they sold it to me. After a year of trying this computer has the same issues as the day it was bought and I am stuck with a bad purchase from a poorly run local business.

I would also like to make the observation that when you call the store using the number given on the company business card they DO NOT answer it with the business name or any other usual form of announcement of where you are calling. They simply answer it "hello" and when you ask if this is "Unique Thriftique" they are hesitant to say yes. And trying to get the name of who you are talking to is like pulling teeth. Very odd for a business to operate that way, as if they have to hide from who they are and what they do.   Well I guess they do if all customers are treated like I was!

This is in response to a comment on the dealings I had with this store. WOW, it sounds like you may have been in this store and had the same experience I did.

Yes I do know how second hand stores function, and that they are primarily wswg, no exceptions. However this was not an impulse buy and I spoke at length with Mike PRIOR to buying the Asus. I did not however verify the refund policy prior to purchase. I felt that he was selling me a GOOD usable item and as they are a local business in my neighborhood I gave them the benfit of the doubt and felt they would  not find it good customer policy to sell bad products. And as Mike was the one who refurbished computers on site I again trusted him.

As for your comment on my "acting innocent" and "crying about the situation" all I can say is you have no clue as to how things went down and I do have two other people as well as back up letters regarding the attempts I made to have this business honor good faith practices.

Yes I am aslo aware that the price of $274 is far from the price some computers are sold. If I had the $1,200 to spend on a super computer rest assured I would have. I am a working middle class lady that does not mind spending my hard earned money on a RELIABLE item. I do not just throw my money away on junk. I work too hard and value what I buy.

As far as them making an earnest effort to repair this item as you stated I feel they did not. If it had been repaired it would have been a working item and not the crap I am left with. It was a bad refurbish done by a poorly trained man that I trusted to be an honorable and reliable businessman. And as their own policy states REPAIR /REPLACE w/ in 90 (not 30 stated prior) days I expected them to HONOR a good faith business deal.

I also want to make it clear to you that I routinely buy used items, 4 laptops off Craigslist each for less than $150. All of these are still working and have never had any issues at all over the past 5 years I have had them. So I do know this Asus was a bad product from a bad business that others should be made aware of. They are fine for buying kids toys, and playsets but do not trust them with your computer buys.

Perhaps you would be interested in the Asus w/ Win 7 that I am upset about? Sounds like you have all the answers and will be just fine making this item function. It also sounds like the price I would sell it to you for would be no sweat off your nose either. Let me know.

And unless you were in the store and on the phone during all my interactions with this store I suggest you mellow out and don't make it sound like you know first hand about this situation.

Thank you for you support!

Its a thrift store, meaning that YOU are purchasing USED products at a cheaper then normal price. Trust me an ASUS laptop costs far more then $274.00. YOU the consumer MUST expect these types of issues BECAUSE you are buying used crap. Yes sometimes you can find that gem of an item that has been donated due to the people donating not knowing the true value. But for every one of those gem finds you have 20 crap finds. Such as the one you are dealing with. NEVER buy discounted electronics. ALWAYS buy electronics from reputable dealers. Best Buy, RadioShack, frys ect. Atleast if something happens with your purchase you have a remedy. According to most shopkepper laws, he "fixed" it twice and instructed you on its use. They have done all that is legally required for them to do.

YOU are still unhappy about it and YOU keep pushing for a full refund. But thrift stores DONT have to follow the usual retail rules. They are kinda a subset off of the usual retail. So make sure YOU set clear goals for yourself but understand WHAT you are getting into. Its no different then buying something from a yard/garage sale. Its someone elses JUNK and there are no refunds. While Im sure it has made you feel better to rant online, the reality is that your story is INCREDIBLY one sided. In YOUR tale of woe YOU paint yourself as this innocent victim that this EVIL sales person just bullies and belittles. But we ALL know that YOU were FAR from innocent and nice. YOU were just as bad as the person YOU have made a post on. But telling the world the TRUTH doesn't get you as much pity as YOU think you need.

Accept that YOU chose to make a purchase from what amounts to a JUNK store. Accept that the choice YOU made was a poor one and chalk it up as a life lesson. Your ONLY course of action would be to try a small claims court case. But that can backfire on YOU just as much as it has a chance to get your money back. Does it suck?? YEP!!!! Is it very fair?? NOPE!!!! But that is life. Its not always fair or nice. You DO have my sympathies as no one should have to pay money for junk. Always FULLY read ANY return policy BEFORE you wish to make a purchase like this. Make sure that if YOU have an issue that YOU can get back your money.
