Universal Gas and Electric showed up at my door on April 15 (tax time). They played on the fears of rising gas prices and claimed that with a 20% discount, they would save me lots of money on my natural gas bills over the next five years. I expressed concern over being locked in for 5 years and asked if there was a penalty if I changed my mind before the 5 years was up. The rep stated that there would be NO penalty at all.

Over one month later, I received a confirmation letter from Universal Gas and Electric (dated April 16th). I didn't receive it until May 19th, after it was too late to cancel. That was when I found out about the $250 early cancellation penalty.

Since then, I have contacted the MPSC to file a complaint (to which they replied that I would have to honor the contract. Thanks for nothing). I also filed with the Attorney General's office and with the BBB. The company has left voice mails with me, regarding the complaints to the MPSC and BBB (they always try to contact me after hours) asking me to get back to them. I've tried to call them back. No one is ever available.

I'm not sure what to do at this point.
