I am a University of Phoenix Student. I am happy with my course of study, and I graduate soon. However.... the Financial Aid portion and unexplained fees at this school are beyond rediculous. I have friends at other for-profit universities and when I asked and compared the fees, University of Phoenix is just plain greedy. They will stop at nothing to charge you what ever they can.

Just 6 classes before my graduation and numerous times, University of Phoenix would hit me with an "Out of Pocket Expense" fee. And told me I could not go on to the next class without paying it. These fees would range from 600 to 2000 dollars. They will even stop students from recieving loan funds from your lender if you do not pay them thier extra fees first.

I was thinking of this school for my Masters but they are just too darn expensive and they have no good customer service in thier Financial Aid department.

Some info on out of pocket expense

Since you are less than 6 classes away from graduation, I can safely assume your last Financial Aid award was a qualification as a level 4 student. If you read the documentation governing the rules and regulation you will notice a part called the "Shortfall in Funding". this basically states that Financial Aid does not always cover the full cost of tuition and you should ask your Finance Advisor what you should expect as an out of pocket expense. I assume since you have been going to UOP for a while now that you are on an 8 class per year schedule. At $475 per credit, 3 credits per class and online book fees this would come to $1495 per class. $1495 times 8 classes in one year comes to $11960. As a level 4 student you rate $10500/annual in loan money. After origination fee this gets cut down to $10080 and then you get two disbursements of $5040 every 6 months. Subtract the total cost of tuiton and books for 8 classes from these amounts and you come out to $1880/year or $940 every 6 months. This is not taking into accounts any grant money you may have qualified for. These figures are bases on 8 classes per year with no discounts, taking a one week break in between classes. Now if you took 10 classes in one year then obviously your annual costs would go up because you are taking the extra two classes. There is no fine print on the documentation and nothing is hidden from you. There is no deceptive wording in the financial aid documents you sign. The loan comes from the government not UOP. As far as not allowing your funds to come in to your account, like I said before, your funds come every 6 months per disbursement. The only way they can stop your money from coming in is by not allowing you to go to your next class. If you are not in your next class then you can't get your disbursement. You must complete at least 30 weeks of instructional time and 24 credits before you can reapply for funding. You have to complete at least 12 credits in the first 6 months to recieve your second disbursement. If you don't complete that fourth class then you will not recieve your money. That is Department of Education Policy that UOP is required to enforce. Expensive or not you might want to learn a bit more about how financial aid works before you go and use it again. From what it sounds like to me, their Finance department did exactly what they were supposed to do.
