Credit unions charge fees just like normal banks. I ought to know, I bank at one.

Gloria, What probably happened is when your son deposited the check the teller probably forgot to make it available immediately. My husband used to have the same problem. Your son should have looked at the receipt he was given and on the receipt it would say if the funds were available or not. us bank will allow you to overdraw your account and say it is just a courtesy. I am very sorry you had this happen. I moved away from us bank and now belong to a credit union. Credit unions care about you they are not fee driven they are customer driven. Give it a thought. I wish you nothing but the best and I am sorry this happened to your son.

Don't use your son's unfortunate medical condition as an excuse for him being negligent with his account. It's bad taste. The date the funds are availible is on the receipt. When a new account is opened, non-cash deposits take up to five days to clear. This is in effect for the first 30 days of the life of the account. It was in the documentation that HE SIGNED when he opened the account. This holding period is not a US Bank policy, but part of the Patriot Act. Apparently the government has to stick their nose into your business to make sure you're not a terrorist. If you want to blame someone, how about the jerk in the oval office?
