I was Ripped Off by VIPKID ESL teaching Chinese children English. After, all the bad reviews online I should seen this is a warning for a scam. I passed the Demo and Interview with flying colors. I just completed my Masters in Elementary Education and have 6 years experience in teaching. Some guy named Andy was very rude telling me to close my pink blouse and I should have worn a orange shirt! He then told me to purchase a expensive headset. I had a well sound microphone. I could hear and see him well. First, Andy said I was hired and will proceed with the contract. 2 minutes later he said, I will need to verify some information and will email you. I got the email saying" Our interviewee found you to be a excellent teacher with experience but we have other stronger applicants. We can not move forward your apllication".

I find this comment to be of a personal nature, not realistic. Obviously this person is hurt to have not been accepted as a teacher for VIPKID. I understand- the company is so great that I’d be disappointed too. A lot of times when people are offended, they lash out in ways like this— I.e. I’m not happy so I don’t want anyone else to be either. The truth is that- yes, the company is very selective. They are in search of teachers for elementary aged children. If you came to an interview showing cleavage, then that was a very bad call. These are children - and Chinese children at that. Parents are more conservative there, but it would still be inappropriate at an American school!! Also, the headset is essential. Mine cost $12, which hardly anyone would consider expensive. And you can write it off on your taxes (at least you could til the new GOP tax bill takes that away, but I digress). And I paid $3 for each of my orange shorts from Goodwill, and they have them crisp and new at Walmart for $5. Big whoop!
I have completed 2, 6-month contracts and I’m so thrilled with this company!! I didn’t have to put my baby in day care because I can work a few hours while she’s asleep. The easy, extra income has really helped our family and I feel very excited to be exposed to a culture on the other side of the world. Broadening your horizons is a huge bonus!! The company started in 2013, and is growing rapidly. When I started there were 5,000 teachers, now there’s over 25,000 - and students have grown from 100,000 to 250,000!! They need good teachers and are constantly offering incentives for teachers to recruit new ones!! So, if Madame Pink Shirt didn’t get in, be sure there’s a good reason! And the other comment about surprise classes is nuts!! You have an app on your phone. Don’t want to open last minute classes, then don’t click the 24-hour button- easy-peasy!! But, you do get $2 extra for late bookings- but be ready to teach them should the spots fill (duh!). You’re completely in control of your schedule. Don’t want to work Saturdays or Christmas, then don’t! The flexibility is so wonderful! I love this job & other people who for the bill would like it too. A friend of mine just made it from I interview to her first class in one week. This company rocks!!!
