I've been at Vitas over 16 years and I can honestly say I've never seen worse treatment of the employees at any of the places I've worked or where friends and family work.
The management is completely out of touch with its people and they lack a compassion someone in hospice should have. But focused on revenue and dividends I do not expect them to care... Oh wait, I do! If the leader does not carry the necssary attitude to protect their employees, patients and families then everyone suffers from the top down. And trust me big egos are abundant here. Rather than share the wealth with the staff, executuves receive bonuses, the hodling company Chemed buys new jets and the staff performing the real work are told there is a salay freeze. Very nice for a healthcare company... Or for a cash cow.
As a patient or family member, you can find a better place to care for your loved ones. Vitas nurses are great but again, it is the current structure that limits us and in many cases makes it harder to do the job with poor technology.
Your PHI. Not very protected with their EPR. It consistently loses data causing me to have to go back, remember everything from the day sometimes even from 2-3 days prior and then document the visits from memory. I consistently have OT simply because of the equipment they make me use doesn't work I have to do double the work but am expected to not record my OT. I am expected to eat my lunch while driving to the next patients house. My poor computer guy actually cried one day as he had 3 people standing in front of him yelling at him that their PCs didn't work and wasn't storing information. He looked up and said I can't make these things work and this is all they give me. He even said his boss was of no help to him and that if he were to return the PC they'd send him the same thing back.
The company is somewhat embattled. If you google Vitas for lawsuits you'll see suits for denying correct pay (OT), breaks, lunches, Etc.. The company does not care for its own employees why would it care for a stranger (patient and family)? Oh yeah because the Fed gov pays them to care! Smart business.
If there is any organization that deserves a full and wide audit/investigation for its practices, treatment of employees and overall integrity, it is Vitas.
If I had one wish it would be that the owners remember this is a God loving organization and they way they treat people is anything but. The backstabbing, lying, underhanded and dishonest practices need to come to an end.
