Here is my complaint.

The Walmart Store here in Findlay, Ohio on Trenton Avenue marks up their clearance items to higher prices.

Last week I purchased some Duncan Hines brownie mix which they have in their clearance section of their one food aisle. Last week I paid $1.00 for a box of the mix.

Today I went back to the store to get some other groceries and checked out the food clearance again and seen they changed the sign for the brownie mix to $1.46.

Thinking it must of been a mistake as I have never seen any store mark up their clearance items, I put 2 boxes of the mix in my cart and finished my shopping and headed for the checkout

I asked the girl to scan the Brownie mix to see what the price came up at and it came up at $1.46.I told her I did not want them then and Walmart should not be marking up their clearance items. The boxes were still in the exact same spot they were last week on the clearance shelve but marked up by 46 cents.

Summed up, Watch what you buy at that Walmart store in Findlay, Ohio as the clearance may be marked up higher than it was before.

you've got like 5 reports on here. you've got walmart and a few others i read, and now you also are complaining about enterprise rent a car. i guess this is all some big conspiracy on everyone else's part to constantly rip you off..you must have a target on your back, or a neon sign over your head that says..."here i am..ready to be ripped off".. please go to another site and leave this site for the people that are actually getting ripped off.

Watch out for Clearance Items at Walmart Stores. They are not always the lowest price

Be careful when buying any clearance item at any Walmart Store. The brownie mix is not the only thing I have noticed that went on clearance and then the store marks it back up to regular price. Keep a eye on the clearance sections at Walmart and go back a few days later and compare and see what items the prices were changed on and marked up. If something is marked on Clearance then it should remain at the clearance price and marked down even more if needed. Not marked up !! I am talking CLEARANCE ITEMS and not sale items. I remember when Walmart first started they stated they Would have the Lowest Prices and have no sales and they also stated they would have most if not all of their items made in the United States. Go to any walmart store and 90 percent of the store is made in China This is one of the biggest reasons the economy here is going down hill fast. We are supporting the Chinese and not the American Workers. Walmart is the biggest importer from China in the world. Wake up America Boycott Walmart and only buy USA made goods.

Location should not affect pricing? Are you kidding me? I live in SE Alaska, where everything is more expensive. Our costs rival those of NY and LA. Why? Certainly not because we are as popular as those two hot spots, no! Because it is very expensive to get items to us. See, I am on a very large island, in the middle of an ocean. There are no bridges to the continental US that a truck can drive on, no. Our food and clothing and other supplies must come on a barge, which takes two weeks to arrive from Seattle. So, I spend a little more than $5 a gallon for milk. I spend $2 a bottle for ketchup and $5-6 a box for cake mix. Is it a ripoff? No, I also happen to work at the grocery store. I know what it costs us in transportation to get those items. Its a fair mark up. The fact is, some places are more expensive, for whatever reason. WalMart has every right to adjust their prices to the market. If you don't like it, move to Russia, China, Cuba, Venezuela, they all pay the same price for everything: their freedom. Oh, and grow up, someone screwed up. WalMart is huge, they can't monitor every item on every shelf. Did it ever occur to you that it was a special deal on those few boxes?

Finally Marked the Brownie Mix back down to $1.00 per box.

Someone from Walmart must read on Ripoffreport. They finally marked down their Brownie Mix located in their Clearance section in the Food Isles to $1.00 after marking it back up a few months ago to $1.46. I was out there last night and seen they have several cases of the brownie mix priced now at $1.00 per box.

Do not shop at Walmart on their clearance items

#7Author of original report

Fri, January 18, 2008

Summed up do not shop at any walmart as you do not know if their prices ar correct. And I also found out that each walmart can have different prices and sometimes even higher prices on the same items in each store. they claim Location has to do on how they set their prices. That is not fair to consumers at all. Walmart should not charge higher prices for the same item at one store and lower at another location. Does not make any sense at all other than they are gouging people.

I don't see this as a ripoff

You have not been ripped off. Regardless of what price Walmart put on the item in question, you knew what it was before you took it to the check out. If the extra $.46 was more than you wanted to pay, then you simply could just put the item back. I am thankful that this website exists. I use it to check on companies that I have never dealt with just to see if they come up. However the majority of complaints seem to be from people that have either been inconvenienced because they did not want to show their receipt when leaving the store (not a ripoff), having to pay overdraft penalties that they incurred while spending more money than they had in the bank (not a ripoff), getting called multiple times by collection agencies attempting to collect a debt(not a ripoff), to getting blackballed from a cheap motel (not a ripoff). It seems that the overwhelming majoity of posts are from people that just want to complain because society doesn't let them have everything their way. Again, I wrote majority, not all. I also find it amusing that someone will post their complaint and then receive multiple suggestions on how to avoid the same situation in the future, only to rebut the suggestions and still cry foul. Of course this is only my opinion, and I am sure someone will "put me in my place".

that you actually went in and paid the extra .46 that you ripped them off? It was your purchase that was mismaerked.....not the packages now.

Do not shop at Walmart anymore

#10Author of original report

Wed, December 19, 2007

Summed Up. Do not shop at Walmart, Period. Go look for yourself at the Trenton Avenue Walmart in Findlay. they have a Clearance section for food items they marked down. That Clearance section has been there for several months and they add items as needed on things they mark down on Clearance. that Brownie mix is still sitting in the Clearance section as was marked up 46 cents My point is that They Should Not Mark Up Something that they Marked on Clearance at a lower price. That is STupid on Walmarts part and makes no sense at all. The Clearance section contains items from all parts of the Food Department and a Variety of items. Go out there and look for yourself.

Walmart does not check their shelves

#11Author of original report

Summed up. Walmart on Trenton Avenue in Findlay, Ohio does not check their shelves to make sure items are in their right spots and if they are in the clearance section they should be marked with Clearance price and not increased a week or two later.

that this ever-so-honest consumer advocate went back to the store and paid them the additional $.46 instead of living with their own error the rest of their life. I mean, after all, like the others said....it could easily been mismarked when YOU bought it.

You honestly believe this is a rip off????? You are an adult correct? C'mon, as it has already been stated, stores change prices regularly and NO IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE ITEM IS ON THE CLEARANCE AISLE OR NOT as you so much like to stress. Last week you paid $1.00 for the cake mix they were probably older than the cake mixes that are now on the clearance aisle for $1.46, regardless, when a store, whether it is Walmart, Sears, Target or any freaking one, they set the price that they want. Get over it, it's not a rip off, it's called SALES.

Lots of Doubt

#15Consumer Comment

Wed, December 12, 2007

I doubt seriously it was a rip-off to anyone except Walmart. The likelihood is that Wal-Mart ripped itself off by putting the items at $1.00, and then realizing the following week that the price should have been $1.46. The scenarios others brought up could also be applicable. The fact clearance brownie mix (is that anything like floor popcorn?) rose by $0.46 doesn't indicate a rip-off based on what you posted - the greater likelihood is that you received cake mix for $0.46 cheaper than you should have. I think it funny that Wal-Mart probably ripped themselves off.

So what if they marked the price back up. Perhaps it was a mistake to be priced at a dollar and they were just correcting their mistake. Think of it this way. You were there two weeks before and purchased them for $1.00, when they should have been on clearance for $1.46. So you basically saved an additional $0.46 per box. Stores get audit reports and if they get a report that an item is being sold for a different price that what the systems says it should be, it gets reported to the management. It is then up to the management to correct the mistake. Which I bet is what happened in this case. You can't call it a rip off because you did not buy more at the $1 and wanted the same price a couple of weeks later, clearance or not. As to why they are in the clearance section, I would agree with the Employee. They could be close to the sell buy date, or discontinued packaging and to "move" the item they need to lower the price. This happens quite often in these general merchandise big-box retailers that have food sections.

They, as a free enterprise, can set the price at whatever they want. If you don't want to pay that price, then don't-that's your choice. $1.46 may be a bargain to someone else. Who are you to say?

Mmmmm could it be that the item in question was OUT OF DATE?

#18UPDATE Employee

Did you ask management about the price difference? They would have an explanation as to why the item is a bit higher. Such as: If the "use by date" or the freshness date has past by a wide margin, then to move the product, it would be priced lower, just to get the item out of the store and not have to return to the plant and record a loss. Also it could be possible that, say fudge brownie mix is priced different than that of regular brownie mix. Labels are a BIG part of sales. Also there is such thing as inflation. It is VERY possible that the starting price was raised due to S&D. (Good example is gas prices). There could have been a "sale" on the clearance items. That also happens to move products out of the store to make room for more sale items. It is a standard practice in the industry to lower prices to move items of over stock, just like it is standard to inflate prices on items for a small bit before a sale to make that sale "look" really good. Wal-mart still undercuts many other stores and there are still very good bargains to be had. There seems that there is no underhandedness going on here. Just standard capitalism.

Item was in CLEARANCE SECTION and not with regular priced items

#19Author of original report

Wed, December 12, 2007

The item I am referrring to in the above complaint is in the CLEARANCE SECTION OF THE FOOD DEPARTMENT AT WALMART ON TRENTON AVENUE IN FINDLAY, OHIO. It is not with the regular priced items of that category. Walmart on Trenton Avenue has a section at the end of the one aisle where they place items they put on clearance as far as food department items goes. The brownie mix is still sitting in that CLEARANCE section but the price was changed to $1.46 instead of the $1.00 that it was on CLEARANCE FOR 2 WEEKS AGO. AND NOW PRICED HIGHER AT $1.46. Walmart must think consumers are stupid and some people will not realize that it was on CLEARANCE CHEAPER BEFORE and now priced higher and some people may think the $1.46 is Clearance price. I believe the regular price is $1.46 but would have to go back out to the store and check it in person. IF THEY DO NOT WANT IT ON CLEARANCE THEN MOVE IT BACK TO THE REGULAR SECTION OF THAT FOOD CATEGORY AND GET IT OUT OF THE CLEARANCE SECTION AND DO NOT TRY AND MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE SOMETHING IS ON CLEARANCE WHEN IT IS NOT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT 2 WEEKS AGO I BOUGHT 2 BOXES OF THE MIX OUT OF THE CLEARANCE SECTION FOR $1 PER BOX. LAST WEEK IT WAS MARKED UP TO $1.46 AND THE BOXES THEY HAVE LEFT ARE STILL SITTING IN THE FOOD CLEARANCE SECTION BUT NOW PRICED HIGHER. SAME ITEM, JUST PRICED HIGHER NOW AND IN FOOD CLEARANCE SECTION

Any intelligent adult knows how the " sale " prices work. Ex. the canned tuna I buy my cats are .99 per can normaly. Then they may run a sale at .79 per can. Other times its .59 per can. And finally once in a while its at .40 per can. THEY'RE ALL SALE PRICES. A savvy consumer knows the BEST price is around .40 so when I see that, I load up. Any price below regular is a " sale " price.

....of Duncan Hines brownie mix? Is it more than $1.46? If so, I would still consider it a clearance price, just not at the same price you previously paid or would expect to pay.
