I tried to purchase an ipad from Walmart.com. I entered my credit card information (my bank credit/debit card) and was turned down due to the mismatch of information (I had just moved and although I had called the bank with my new address, the card was still listed in the old address). After 3 attempts to purchase the ipad, the website message said "you can no longer use that card - due to the mismatch of information". I went to Best Buy and purchased the ipad using my old address. When I logged in to my bank account I was shocked to see a $640 pending charge to Walmart (in addition to the $640 charge to Best Buy), since the transaction was turned down by Walmart.

I called Walmart and they told me to call my bank. I called Chase and they told me to call Walmart. I called and emailed both institutions 3 more times each. It's one week later and they still have not released the hold on the $640. My account is dwindling and I cannot spend that money, or my account will be charged an overdraft fee. To top it off my company is 3 paychecks behind in paying me, my husband's check won't clear for another 10 days (even though it was deposited 5 days ago by a large and reputable company), and so we really need the funds. It seems that everyone wants to hang on toour rightfully earned money.I can't even believe its legal that they can tie up my money on a transaction they refused to put through! How can that be?

The reason there's a hold is that your bank approved the transaction. However since the address was different the transaction didn't pass Walmart's processing.

Something you might want to try: Call your bank's customer service line and see if they can help do a 3 way call to Walmart. If so and they bank rep gets confirmation that Walmart does not intend to request the payment, then the bank rep MAY be able to release the hold and allow you access to the money. The bank I worked for allowed this type of assistance but I don't know if Chase does. Ask Chase what the time period is for items being on hold and no payment requested before the hold expires. Many banks have a 3 business day window. Meaning if something's on hold and the payment isn't requested in 3 business days the hold expires and the money is available for your use.

As far as the paycheck problem: I'd suggest direct deposit for your husband if his company offers it. And I suggest Department of Labor for you. If you're paid weekly, you're 3 weeks behind. It gets worse if pai less often. I'd definately be contacting Dept of Labor if my employer hadn't paid my in 3 (or more) weeks.

Point of Sale Dispute

If there has been an unauthorized transaction on your account call the number on the back of your card and report it. The bank will open an investigation called a Point of Sale Dispute. This procedure is listed in the bank's policy and procedures. In addition, banks are bound by Regulation E. If you don't know what that is try googling it. I found a $59.99 purchase that I did not make on my bank statement. I filed a claim and within 24 hours the funds were credited back. A couple of weeks later I received a letter affirming my claim that the transaction was fraudulent. Unfortunately these types of things happen and banks have procedures to rectify them. If someone at Chase said to call Walmart it was probably because the sale was still pending at the time, and maybe Walmart would be able to give you more information about the pending sale. If the funds are still being withheld, tell Chase you demand to file a claim and have them investigate it. By alerting them to the problem you are following their policy by informing them about the unauthorized transaction promptly, and they should follow their own policy about fixing it.

In the future use a credit card for online purchases. If there is an error in processing at least your day to day monies won't be affected. A suggestion: When you call and make your POS dispute, don't yell. Don't curse. Don't assume the person who picked up the phone is the most deserving of all your rage. They're not the one who used your bill money to buy an ipad. Calls get, "dropped" all the time for various reasons and yelling will get you no where.

Good Luck!
