This doesn't mean that anyone will be arrested for writing a post-dated check; but that the banking and legal systems don't recognize the concept of a post-dated check. Banks don't have to look at the date on a check, so they don't. You have to trust the company not to deposit the check early. Without something in writing, you shouldn't trust any company. Banks don't have to refuse to cash checks because there isn't enough money in the account. They've discovered they can make a lot more fees if they do. On the other hand, if the check turns out to be bad when it is cashed on or after the post-date, in most states the company doesn't have recourse thru "bad check" laws.

They told you "They would give you back your money and you would give them ANOTHER post dated check". I find that hard to believe. I've never heard of any utility giving money back. I do believe the part about holding a check though. You might check with the state and see if they have any funds to assist folks in need.
