I started trying to contact yelp to get help with a negative fictitious review left by a former employee. Of course the only way to get in touch by phone was through advertising sales. The young man I reached helped with my problem then started trying to sell me advertising. He said my package would be $275 a month in ad clicks and a $50/month as few for a page with a video on a one year contract. He said my ad clicks would cost around $5 each and we only paid for clicks. So if we only got 20 clicks, we would only pay $100 plus the regular $50 fee. I sign up. In the first week I noticed I had used $70 but only had 10 ad clicks. Two emails to my sales rep did no good. Finally someone else called. She explained the price of an ad click fluctuates depending on demand and traffic, etc. So I am paying over $11 per click. Given the small area our business is in, there is no way we would use $275 worth of as clicks a month at $5 each--- I wish we did! But Yelp is making sure they get their $275 one way or another. Even at $11 per click, if just 1 turned into a customer, I would be happy, but so far no one we have asked has said they found us on yelp.

About my contract...

I looked over my contract and indeed, there is language in it about the price per click changing. Some wording about competing bids. So, we are bidding against other companies for clicks? Ridiculous. Since we are the only business of our type in the area who is advertising on yelp, I wonder who we are bidding against for clicks? A florist? Plumber? Never once was this explained or mentioned to me during my sign up process. Shame on yelp for not being up front with this. They may rope small businesses into a contract, but will not be able to keep them as loyal advertisers once the contract is over.
