I have been a member of the Ketchum-Downtown YMCA in Los Angeles, CA since August,2000. As most lazy people I stopped going after just 3 months or so. My agreement with the YMCA was that they do an electronic bank withdrawal every month of $52.00 for my membership fees.

I let the whole thing go (my fault)allowing the withdrawals to continue in the hopes that it would motivate me to eventually go back to the gym.

Well, by July 1st of 2002 I felt i had contributed enough and wrote a letter to the Y telling them that I was paid up thru July 31st and was effectively cancelling my membership (per my banks instructions).

Well, they continued to withdraw from my account..I went to my bank and they told me that the YMCA was notorious for this practice and the only way I could stop them was to cancel my bank card and have it re-issued with a different number to stop them from withdrawing money.

Now that they cant take any money out I get a bill saying I owe $80.00 and will also be charged a $25.00 late fee and they deny that they never received the letter.

How can I owe $80.00 since I dont ever go to the YMCA? They would not let me thru the turn-stile if my membership card was in question...it just wont scan.

Now they continue to send me bills and I will now have to hire an attorney to help me fight this, otherwise my credit will be messed up.

Shortly after I filed this complaint I decided to call the YMCA one last time...they still didnt answer my call, so i called another YMCA and they put me thru directly...Lo and behold Desiree the person who wouldnt return my calls answered and after I explained who I was and what I needed, she proceeded to apologize and assure me that the problem would be resolved to my complete satisfaction...She told me she would close my file and that she would personally make sure I was not charged any additional or late fees...I believe she was sincere. I am supposed to receive a letter confirming this. Thank you for the opportunity to use your service. Yours truly, Alex
