Re: Gesh Don't whine. Well in response to your comments, I would not call Bubba and his station wagon to come and fix it, but I did call all the other reputable businesses after the fact and asked them what they would charge for the same call and installing the same thermostat and it was $100.00 cheaper. This did include the service call and labor. We are not St. Louis, this is a small town and pricing ususally reflects. It is also interesting that alot of the plumbing supply stores in this town has nothing but contempt for A-1 Heating and Cooling. I found this all out a little to late. We have learned a valuable lesson in this. Buyer beware. From now on we will stay away from companies that are only after the big bucks and don't give a crap about their service.

First off, I have been in the HVAC business for over 20 years. Second, I feel very compelled to respond to you in a very abusive manor, but I will try not to do so. How much do you think you should have been charged? Get a CLUE! 200 bucks would not have touched having a thermostat replaced by me. The only thing I will grant you is you would have known up front. My fee to show up at your door step is $150. that includes up to ONE hour to determine what repair needs to be completed. Typicaly it takes 30 minutes or less but there are times it takes the full hour. You are then presented a cost to complete the repairs, you either want it done or you do not, it is that simple. If you decline, pay me my 150 bucks and I leave, you retain the list of recomended repairs to shop around with whoever you so choose. I also absolutly would NOT install a cheap thermostat. There are extreeme disadvantages that can result in other equipment failure if a cheapie fails. With that said, your bill from me would have been closer to 300 perhaps 350 depending on the options you choose for your new thermostat. Now while you prepare your scathing reply to this meaning myself, rip off artist answer me a few questions if you will. How much is my yearly insurance on a commercial heavy load van? How much is my yearly interest on the parts in inventory on that van? How much is my liability insurance in case i accidently bump your wall with a screwdriver, stain your carpet, scratch your floor, drop a tool by mistake on a italian marble floor and chip it and it has to be repaired? How much of that repair cost went to pay taxes? How much for hazardous waste? (you can not toss old mercury type thermostats in the trash in case you dont know) What about workmans comp insurance for my employees? How about bonding fees? What about the 20,000 I have in tools on the van? How much did that ad you saw in the yellow pages when you decided to call cost? How much gas do you think that van uses a month? How much do you thing tires cost? Now last but not least, how much do you think as a fully trained and multipule certification HVAC/R Tech should i be allowed to make per year? Now if you actually bothered to even guess at those cost, your likely low but use your own figure. Divide that figure by 2080, the yearly hours on a 40 hour week. now with all that you have my COST to put a tech in a truck and send him to your house for an hour to put a thermostat on. Bear in mind i said send a tech, I have not made a flipping dime yet as the owner. With all that in your head now, can you really tell me you think 230 bucks to have a system diagnosed as a bad thermostat and get it repaired? I can not fathom why sooooooo many people think a tade that cost about 20,000 for training alone is constantly ripping them off when there are some HUGE legitimate business cost that only benifit the CUSTOMER we serve. Next time call "bubba" in his station wagon he will do it for 50 bucks, but when your house burns down and you find out bubba's only asset is that 1969 station wagon, you might think 50 bucks cost more than 350 bucks every single day.
