The following letter was emailed to the generic mailbox at the AAMCO site.

In February of 2004 I was experiencing poor shifting in my Jeep and trusting the AAMCO name I allowed the above shop to perform repairs. The shop rebuilt the transmission on my Jeep costing me $2,150.42. They performed an "AAMCO reconditioned transmission service with an exchange rebuilt P&C torque con.... (illegible). In April of 2005 I experienced poor shifting again and brought the Jeep back. I paid $307.15 for transmission service AAMCO minor repair to include electrical diagnostics, repair wiring, transfer case speed sensor and labor to replace sensor.

It is now June of 2005 and my problem is the Jeep is in the shop again and they DO NOT KNOW WHY the previous repair failed but it will cost me upwards of $1700.00 to perform nearly the SAME repair as before. This is the 3rd time the Jeep has been at this shop for poor shifting. First on 2/11/04, then on 4/20/05 and now in June.

Had I known I would have to bring the Jeep back for additional work I would have saved my time and purchased an OEM for $3,000.00 and been done with it. AAMCO has failed me. I am relegated to spending money out of pocket to take a train to work (whereas I would normally get mileage reimbursement from my employer when I drive to work).

To say I am unhappy does not nearly approach where I am. I did not think it necessary to contact a local TV station, or the N.Y. Attorney General's office or a lawyer. I do think it is time for AAMCO to back their sterling reputation.

My Jeep is in the shop and I have not authorized any repairs pending what information I receive from your offices. As it is after business hours now I will contact the shop tomorrow and let them know I have contacted you and they should not do any work until I or they hear from you.

Looking forward to your most speedy reply.>>

Needless to say I did not hear back until my wife provided me with a phone number for the AAMCO Dealer's Assn. My wife also found that by right-clicking on the customer (dis)service email page you can see a real person's email address. Although everyone has been very sympathetic (Yes, I agree... blah, blah, blah) I am getting nowhere!

The Tranny Shop owner Bob, first offered to reduce the labor charges from $90/hour to $60/hour. When I told him I would pay for the parts (approximately $750.00) and he absorb the labor (approximately $1040.00) he said he would see what he could do.

Unfortunately what he could do was nothing. He rescinded his offer and is basically telling me tough sh*t, pay all or we'll toss the tranny in the back of your Jeep. I was able to contact Don Scott from AAMCO corporate who got Bob the owner to agree to a final bill of (only, HA!) $1,500.00.

I will have to go with that so that I can get my Jeep back but so help me this is NOT the last this rip-off artist has heard from me.

Will update as events occur.
