Granted,Mary, if you look under the hood every month you could find the problem sooner BUT it would not fix the problem with the AC Delco batteries. They can not keep selling people these batteries when they know there is a problem with them ruining people's cars. Like Dan said above,I take care of my toys! My father is a mechanic and he changes my oil and checks my car over about every three months. So it's not like I've been driving me car around for four years and never having any maintanance done.My car is very well taken care of and running just fine with my Duralast battery. Ac Delco should do a public recall on these batteries.

I had the same problem with my chevy truck and HAD the same results. I did several internet searches on other brands of side mounted battery terminals. I only fround problems with the AC DELCO types!!! So it is not the lazy American thing and I hate when someone has to result to stero-typing!!! I take care of my TOYS!!! How do you solve the problem??? Don't bother with AC Delco batteries, use another brands and this is just my opinion. ;)

As a whole, we Americans have gotten out of the habit of doing much or any preventive maintenance on our cars. Get in, turn the key, crank up the tunes, and go! The type of battery failure described here and the other ACDelco battery cases are a problem, yes, but a problem that can be avoided if the owner looked under the hood once a month or so. The leakage and subsequent damage are easy to notice and neutralize if treated early. Sounds like health advise for our own bodies, eh? A little preventive maintenance goes a LONG way to avoid catastrophic failure down the road.
