Whatever you do, do not let them get a default judgment against you. First of all, call up your courthouse and see if the summons is real or a scare tactic some JDBs will send as an intimidation tactic, hoping that you will pay. If it is real, they are very unlikely to show up in court. Either Asset Acceptance is trying to collect for another junk debt buyer, or they bought old (mostly beyond statute of limitations) debts that are beyond the statute of limitations and beyond the legal credit reporting clock. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT accept their "generous" offer of half cash, half credit. That is a way to get you to reaffirm the debt and starts both the statute of limitations and credit reporting clock over again. This will hurt your credit even more. Call your courthouse as soon as you can and ask if the case number is on calendar.
