I recieved a settelment letter for Verizon Md. for a past due phone bill from 1997. I had just moved and found it odd that this letter had my brand new address. I called the toll free number and inquried about why hadn't I seen this on my credit report - ever. And I wondered why they only accepted credit cards, not money orders, or pay by check over the phone...When I talked to the "customer service rep" told me that it wasn't going to be reported to any credit agency. So of course I said, thats all I'm worried about anyway... and she hung up on me. So they can't be a real agency because NCO puts your past due stuff on your credit report imediatly... so its safe to say don't send them anything---only pay whats on your credit report.

Basically what Michele is saying is that she made the bill but since it is old she isn't going to pay it...thank you for not paying your bill...I guess you are the only one that doesn't have to pay your bills...just because it isn't on your Credit report doesn't mean you don't owe it....that is SO wrong..and you were given the service.... I agree with Anonymous you need to pay it and you need to stop avoiding it for 10+++ years...no not even affiliated with AFNI I just hate people like you, Michele, who refuse to pay..and I am sure you will receive more calls from them since you won't pay..plus it makes everyone else's bill higher..thanks a lot!

Of course they're not going to put it on your credit report! It is past the statute of limitations to be on there it is about 11 years old! It is not credit reportable. Collection agencies who have accounts that are that old can't take you to court or put it on your credit file. Beside, at that age, companies are just going to rely on your morals to pay a bill. Good advice by saying only pay for things on your credit report! That will make the economy better for sure! Better yet, way to make peoples credit score drop, I'm sure they'll get that home loan at a low percentage too! If you used the service, moved and the bill fell through the cracks, why shouldn't you pay? People who don't pay for services provided to them cause rates to go up just like if someone stole from a store, eventually, if enough people do it, they'll raise the price. Major companies won't be hurt by consumers not paying, the people will be hurt. If the letter asked for you to mail in the payment, then the rep is probaly just trying to get you to pay with them over the phone to make sure you pay. Every body says they'll mail it or "It's in the mail." Heck, Roseanne said that all the time!

Unfortunately for all of us....AFNI is a REAL collection agency based in Bloomington, IL. They specialize in ancient, time-barred debt...Most of the time they can't locate the original debtor so they start harassing people with similar names/addresses. Their game is placing the debt on your credit file even if you don't owe it in order to get you to pay to have your credit record cleared.
