It was right before the end of 2007 when I recieved a letter in the mail from a debt collector. They were trying to collect on a debt from a verizon phone bill. I never had a verizon phone bill and this alleged debt was seven years ago. Why of all times would they attempt to collect now? It doesn't make sense. Now they are calling me and harrassing me for a payment. I do believe the Statute of Limitations on debt collection has expired. I would like to know what do I do? I do not want this to ruin my credit.

The statue of limitations only covers credit reporting and that they can't take you to court. They can still ask you to pay. I can think of two possible reasons why this happened to you. One, verizon has bought out a lot of companies and that they might have bought the company you were with prior and now they have your bill and they couldn't collect from you for what ever reason, so they tried to get what they could out of it and sold it to afni. Or, someone used your id and got the service. You never knew about it because it just sat there in their office until afni bought the debt. If you really didn't use the service ask afni how to file fraud so that you can close the account. Either way, it is not going to hit your credit, but many people get confused about statue of limitations they can still ask for payment. Think of it this way: If you lent someone 7 years ago $10,000 and you were a bank, you can't take them to court and you can't put it on their credit file, but they still owe you and you can still ask them to pay but that that is all you can do.
