Apparently I was billed $289.95 for a directory back in April 2000. The bill was inadvertently paid. I never received any kind of directory. Now I am being called by Ameri-Source Publications asking for my billing address. They are telling me that I owe them $299.95. I refuse to answer any of their questions and they just keep calling back. Apparently they've already been taken to task in Vermont, Texas and New York. I don't know how this thing started, but my advice is never to answer a question over the phone from anyone you don't know. Beware!

Unauthorized Taping of Calls

Dear Rose: The unauthorized taping of calls has been illegal as long as I can remember. You (the consumer) must be notified if a tape is being made for "quality assurance purposes" or whatever. As an employee you probably could be considered to have provided your voice to them for compensation so it is likely they can legally use it. The WAY your former employer uses these tapes. Editing them in order to "prove" someone ordered something that they normally wouldn't is clearly fraudulent and is a misrepresentation of you! It would be interesting to have a legal expert weigh in on this particular issue.

After our unsavory experience with Pavlos Angelatos and "World Wide Source" aka "Ameri-Source" we get a call from someone representing these people. They claim we owe them (yep, you guessed it, $399.95) for a directory listing that we did not order or authorize in the first place. They also claim we have a multi-year contract with them and start to put the pressure on.

But wait! These people are far more gracious than Pavlos and his bunch. We can get out of our "contract" if we purchase their overpriced "Digital Trade Show Guide CD-Rom Companion for only $149.00 plus $15.00 shipping and handling.

We have our suspicions as to a connection with "World Wide Source." After all, the Attorney Generals of several states are putting the screws to Mr. Angelatos' original operation. By the way, "World Wide Source" now operates with this New York address:

World Wide Source
1080 Military Turnpike
Plattsburgh, NY 12901

Please instruct ALL people in your company who answer the phone to refuse to talk to these people. That way you will save yourself a lot of hassle. They can't provide a written, signed contract like your legitimate directories. You are under no obligation to a liar even if he does try to make you feel like you owe him something. If you get harassed by these "directory" people, your state Attorney General should be contacted. They know all about them.

Just got a call from a company called International Business Index (IBI). Same story except the price is now $369.00.

I checked the name out with the Better Business Bureau and lo and behold there are even more aliases: American Business Index and Dynamic Marketing Services Inc.

When trying to search down these new names I ended up at World Wide Source Publishing Inc. They're all the same people and they just call with a different name each time.
