Originally I was I was very happy with American Family Insurance while I was thru my agent, Robin Wiedermeyer and after Robin left the insurance industry all together I decided to begin looking around for other companies. I kept AmFam until I received a notice that the Karen S. Hummell Agency in Shelby, Ohio would be my new agent.

I got a form letter in the mail from Ms. Hummell stating that the coverage I received from Ms. Weidermeyer's Agency was "unacceptable" and that I'd be forced to up my coverage limits and thus pay $111.00 MORE in my six month premiums!

It wasnt' until November of 2005 that I decided to switch and I called Ms. Hummell's agency and cancelled over the phone with one of her staff. (Shame on me for not getting the woman's name!) I went instead with Safe-Auto, was offered more coverage for less money.

In January, I get this collection notice from AmFam stating I owed them over $300 for coverage! I called Hummell's agency and informed them this was an outrageous claim and that I had cancelled accordingly back in November. I was then informed that I would be required to forward proof of my Safe-Auo coverage OR be held liable!

I'm sorry but this is blackmail, straight out. I should NOT have to prove anything to the sales rep or their company. I do not owe them anything and they are doing this in an attempt to get me to pay $300.

I find this a HUGE hassle and very poor in taste for not only the agency - which has proven to be inefficient and uncooperative - but also for the company AmFam for their lousy & shady business practices.

If you're thinking about doing business with the Karen S. Hummell agency OR AmFam, I highly recommend AGAINST it!

They are threatening to report me to the credit bureau as delinquent debtor!

BE FOREWARNED!

When I moved to Ohio 3 years ago I was taken by the ads for this company. I made an appointment with an agent in Columbus. Afetr only 15 minutes.....They bumped my insurance up 6 TIMES!!!! Then they said they could NEGOTIATE a lower price!!! I leftr and stayed with my same company I had. I had no accidents, disabilites nothing and credit was sterling. It was like negotiating a used car. NEVER AGAIN!!!

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience, I use them for business too... It sounds like you had a representative that treated you well, then you were forced to go to someone that wasn't or isn't willing to work with you.. Please remember that you CAN switch representatives with another American Family business at anytime. I think there is a 24 hour hotline. I work with faxes on a daily basis and they fail quite a bit, the best way to cancel a policy is NOT by fax.. You can call the corporate office and let them know. The first representative you had, could have been making her own rates which the new Representative you went to didn't like because obviously charges her clients more... You also mentioned a $300 dollar fee for coverage? Did you ask why they are charging you that amount and would it have anything to do with back charges? They are not aware you tried to cancel if they are still stating you owe them money. I would call the corporate office and they should be able to help you further.
