I too like many others was ripped off by these companies.

I got a call from American Values offering me $200 in gas vouchers. I would be enrolled in a trial membership for seven days. They would charge me $1.95 for the information packet. If I cancelled before the seven days were up I would recieve my $1.95 back and wouldn't be charged anything else.

After saying yes to this I was then asked to do the same for three other companies. (U Talk, Well Net, and Wash Ball)Unfortunately I did. I thought it was ok because they said I could get my Money back if I canceled before seven days & the $200 in free gas sounded good.

I received the informaiton packets and called immediately after receiving them and canceled. They told me I would be getting a check in the mail for $1.95 from each company within seven to ten days. Well I never did.

Later i found a charge on my account for $79.95 from Wash Ball.

I called them and they agreed that I had canceled and that they would send me a check within seven to ten days. After waiting I never recieved it so I called back and they said I should have gotten it. They said they would issue another check but I never got that one either.

So I got suspicious and looked up the companies on the internet and found all these complaints.

I went to the bank and told them what happened. Luckily one of the $1.95's and the $79.95 was within 60 days. So they could get those two charges back. However the other charges for the $1.95's were not within 60 days so there was nothing they could do about those.

These companies are taking advantage of hard working people and need to be stopped.

Company Response, more than willing to give a refund

I am Penelope Adams, I'm one of the Customer Service Representatives that handles the programs for American Values, Utalk, Welnet and Washballs. We would just like to give the facts regarding how all of these programs are being offered to the customers. The telemarketer would call the clients and offer them $200 worth of gas vouchers this is for free just for trying out the programs mentioned above. It is clearly explained to customers that there is a seven day free trial for the programs, and after the free trial period they must call to cancel the membership or else they will be charged for the one time activation fee as well as for the membership fee. Prior to being an active member, we have a Quality Assurance Department which validates through a recorded conversation between the telemarketer and the particular customer. It is correct that the three programs of American Values, Welnet and Utalk would charge $1.95 each for the shipping and handling of the packet and Washballs $79.95 for the one time activation fee. However, if the customer decides to cancel the program the amount that was charged to them would be refunded back. The refund will be received by the client into their mailing address. The processing period for the refund normally takes 10-14 business days. The company is more than willing to give a refund for the charges incurred by a customer. As much as we wanted to issue the refunds back to the customer as per our standard lead time, we do encounter problems either on our end or on the bank's end. Rest assured the customer will receive the refund.
