I recently found that I have gallstones. And as of this current moment, I am unemployed, and have no insurance. So I started looking into finding some insurance to have this surgery for my gallbladder to be removed. I filled out an application on a Healthcare.gov website and received several phone calls back from different insurance companies, trying to give me a quote. The first few all told me that they would not be able to give me a quote, as I do not have a bank account. Then I received another call from a Florida number. I answered and he introduced himself as Jason as that he was calling on behalf of America's Health Insurance Group. He began to ask me how long had it been since I had insurance, why I was looking to get insurance, and how much I would be looking to pay a month for it. Well my answers were; I haven't had insurance for about 2-3 years. So then he asked why. I proceeded to tell him that I grew up in state custody and when I was 18 I was out on my own, and no insurance, because I had Tenncare through the state of Tennessee, which is where I was in custody. Then I began to tell him that I had made a visit to the emergency room last month because of months of non-stop pain in my sides and stomach and back. Which is when I found out that I had gallstones. So then he asks me how much was I looking to spend a month for my benefits, and I replied $75 to $100. He puts me on hold for a few minutes, and comes back saying that he has found the perfect policy for me and that I will absolutely love it. So he began to explain it to me, that it came with dental, vision, emergency, hospital, pretty much everything you can look for in an insurance plan. So he asked me how it was sounding. And of course, I replied great, it was sounding too good to be true. But, that's when he said now there is a catch, so let me go on and get this out of the way. That in sickness, you have to wait until the 31st day of your insurance policy to see the doctor, as people would go in and collect a huge debt and then cancel the insurance. But, he said, that would not apply to my gallstones as they are a curable disease. Only for things like pneumonia and other conditions he mentioned. Then that's when he stated that there was a one time enrollment fee of $99 plus the $75 for the first month, which would be a total of $174 to be paid for the first month. I gave him a Visa prepaid card number, which he knew, was expired, saying that I could just give him a call back when I get a new card with the money on it. Which right then, seemed strange, seeing as how most of the insurance companies as soon as I said I didn't have a checking account or prepaid card they said they could not assist me. He said that the reason this was such a good deal and so cheap, was because they are doing a special enrollment period for people such as myself and him. I have called back and cancelled the ongoing policy I have holding as I have now seen this.
