Thirty years ago I bought my first and only home (1983) so when looking for insurance I went with AMICA, a company rated number one after the the comapny for military personnel.  I thought I had made a wise choice until a couple months ago when I put in a claim because my basement floor on one side was  cracking and rising like a crated.  They sent out an ajusted who refused the claim based on it was earth movement caused by nature.

I hired a Home Inspector because I didn't agree and I was right.  The problem was caused by the  used of slag instead of gravel underneth the concrete.  This was very common in the Pittsburgh, PA area in the 40's and50's. The still refused to fix it because it was not covered under my generic policy, even thought the information that this was a common problem in my area was available by 1986.  Had AMICA had offered me additional coverage for this I would have taken it.

Needless to say I went on a search for another insurance company and found out some interesting things.  Number one of the companys I talked to I was informed most companies have a generic policy and unless they have a rider for special circumstances you are out of luck with unique or area specific problems.  Number two if you find youself in the same type of situation as I have you should look for an insurance company that might have coverage or get the cheapest insurance policy by a reliable company and put money aside in case you have to cover the damage yourself.

When I started calling around and talking to 4 of the top comanies I not only found out about the generic policy issue I also found out that for 30 years I was paying around twice as much for my home owners policy, around $20,00 to 25,000 in 30 years and around 3 times as much for my automobile e.g for 2013 I was paying $1332.00 and my car is almost 16 years old.

I have never liked Amica and here is WHY...

I was badly treated by Amica too.     When I was 16 years old, and first got my license to drive a car, I went with Amica for Car Insurance...reason being, I had a relative who was adminstrative assistant to someone in upper executive management.

Everyone in my entire family (and I have a large one) used Amica for auto insurance.

For 30 years, I faithfully paid my premiums with NOT ONE SINGLE CLAIM.

Imagine my surpiise when, about 7 or 8 years ago, I get a leter from them, stating they have changed the way they calculate rates.    I was used to paying about $89/month for car insurance.   The NEW rate was going to be (are you ready?)  $313.00/month

My jaw literally dropped.  It had to be a mistake, this simply wasn't possible.  I immediately called them and for the next hour I got the "royal run-around."    I was transferred from one person to the next, had my call disconnected twice, called back, and got subjected to the same treatment again.   No one could answer a straight queston; it was all double-speak and gibberish.

I couldn't get ONE person at Amica to tell me the truth; to at least explain to me what happened.   I was driving the same car.  I had never been in an auto accidnet.  I have never had a speeding ticket, a DUI, NOTHING.   Why did my rate TRIPLE?

I was beyond frustrated.   Every single person at Amica acted like a robot, repeating from the same script "We have revised our rating system."   Yes, I understand....as a compnay, you've change the way you calculate premiums.  I get it,  I GET IT.   But WHY did my rate MORE THAN TRIPLE?

I told them:  I've been with Amica for 30 years (I started at age 16, and at the time, I was 46.)   I told every person I talked to  "You DO realize I'm going to stop doing business with you, right? "   The answer I got (repeatedly was) "You have the right to choose any insurance you want.   WTF? Had they all gone crazy?

It wasn't just auto either...I had "bundled my house insurance, life insruance (a large term policy on my husand.)  My credit rating was 730; so was my husband's...I was baffled and still am.

When I see their commercials on tv, I get so angry, I switch channels.   This company DOES NOT give a darn about people.   In my opinion, something weird is going on with Amica.

Of COURSE I cancelled all my policies with them, and was quickly able to find another carrier who offered me almost the exact same rates as I had been paying at Amica, until their "new rating program" sent my premiums into the stratosphere.

Something is up with Amica...I dont' know what, and at thsi point, I don't care. I will NEVER, EVER do business with them.   I think, for whatever reason, they intentionaly increased their rates to delibeately get rid of me.   They did it to a bunch of poeple.   It's all part of some game plan...to target their marketing to a certain strata of society, who knows.   It doesn't seem as if it was legal; the insurance industry is heavily regulated and scrutinized, and I could have reported what happened to the Department of Insurance, but at the time, I had a crazy-busy life and it just didn't seem worth it.

So, my 2 cens:  Stay away from Amica!!
