Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
My 80 year old mother purchases an "olive green" sofa and chair. The furniture, when delivered, looks brown. Mom did not want brown. We were told at delivery if there were any problems to contact customer service. We did and were referred back to the store.

At the store the next day, the exact furniture on display looks green. The sales manager said, do you have enough light in your home? We can return it. There is a 30% restocking fee. WHAT? Taped to the counter at the business office is a sign that says: "Cancellation Policy". A return or exchange is considered a "cancellation". So to return the furniture it costs us over $200.00 plus another $60.00 for the pickup.

Had I know I would never have purchased from ASHLEY and never will again. RIP OFF Know your rights before signing for delivery.

Size of the retail furniture industry in the U.S.

According to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, which collects the data, the size of the retail furniture industry in the U.S. in 2006 was $84.5 billion dollars. That should help those who would claim Ashley is a $200 billion company and those who think the entire furniture industry is less than $2 billion.

First of all, did YOU purchase the sofa or did your mother purchase it? You make a couple of conflicting statements in your report. Second, if the cancellation policy is posted at the service counter, then either your mother or yourself (whoever actually purchased the sofa) should have seen it as clear as day when you were in the store making the purchase. What then, is the rip off, besides your unfortunate belief that you are special and should therefore be exempt from following the policies you agreed to at the time of purchase?

2 Billion Dollars? I doubt the entire furniture industry generates 2 billion dollars a year, let alone Ashley...Ashley is approaching 400 BBB reports in Phoenix, and has numerous lawsuits filed against them in Maricopa County Justice Courts. The recession is coming, and companies like Ashley will not sustain the bumpy ride. When I bought from them I was lied to. Employees are responsible for what they say, despite what your small sign on a back counter says. 2 more years max and Ashley Furniture will be out of Phoenix.

can't make everyone happy

I've been a salesman for Ashley and Michael Jedlowski for awhile now and everyday I see managers etc. go out of their way to make customers happy. Like any other retail business you are going to have customers that just can't be satisfied and will lie through their teeth to get what they want. Like any big company sometimes there are communication breakdowns but by and large everyone I know does what they can to help the customer. It doesn't pay not to! Don't let a few sway you from buying a quality inexpensive product.

You signed an agreement at the counter that all returns and exchanges were subject to a 30% restocking fee. I had a consumer call me on the phone irate that the sofa i sent her was NOT the color she purchased, which i found amazing considering ashley will buy like 1 MILLION YARDS OF THE SAME FABRIC to upholster their sofas so there is no dye lot variances. So, I told the lady to bring her couch cushion into the showroom and place it on our display, and lo and behold it was EXACTLY THE SAME. You people seem to fail to realize that the lighting in showrooms is very bright and track lighting, where in your home it is 1 or 2 table lamps. If you feel the color is wrong, bring the cushions into the showroom to compare to the display that you bought from. If there is any descrepancies, I GUARANTEE YOU that Ashley will gladly replace it for you. Stop whining on a message board, you are telling 1 side of a story and trying to make them seem like monsters, they are not a 200 BILLION dollar company by ripping off consumers.

Yes, The BBB, although sometimes just as shady can also help out.

I spent literally hours on the phone with the useless customer service of Ashley in Phx. They actually told me I should go to homedepot and have some wood cut to support my bed until the correct parts arrived...I pretty much went through the roof when I heard that crap. My plan was to take the king size bed frame and send it through their showroom window in Mesa. I came to my senses and filed a BBB report, turns out they have MANY complaints. About two weeks later they picked up the bed and I got a check for the full amount. Then, 9 months from my date of purchase, I get a UPS truck trying to deliver me my missing parts....return to sender please! Now I check the BBB before any major purchase...I've been going with the business with the least amount of complaints and it has been working for me so far.

Hello Monica. A few things to consider before applying for a management position at Ashley Furniture: Are you a blonde? As an ex-employee of Ashley Furniture it became apparent to me during the time that I worked there that Mr. Jedlowski prefers blondes(probably because "blondes have more fun"). Are you willing to sacrifice your marriage (if you're married), time with your children (if you have them), and any other personal plans that may interfere with your being able to be at Mr. Jedlowski's beck and call? If not, reconsider because he will expect you to do so. Are you willing to work under a General Manager who doesn't have the skill or intelligence to manage a pack of monkeys? Are you willing to work hard for empty promises rather than bonuses or raises? I know of several managers who were promised corporate housing, trucks, motorcycles, and other material items in place of monetary bonuses or reasonable raises. Those who actually received the promised items eventually had them taken away again, but most of them quit before they even received them. I would also urge you to look at how many BBB complaints Ashley Furniture has compared to other furniture store before you submit your resume.

I am in the market for new furniture and was thinking of going to Ashley. NOW I WON'T, thank you very much! And Deborah, just so they don't get away with screwing you, you should sue them in small claims court for their "restocking fee" and delivery. They clearly sent you the wrong color. I do believe a judge would believe you over them.

I am pursuing a management position at Ashley Furniture. Before running into this website I was under the impression that Ashley was a respectable company. But these reports make me a little concerned. If you have employment experience with Ashley that you think would help me I would truly appreciate your feedback.

Honestly that situation that happened was terrible and I got a little pissed. I cannot speak for the company but the store that I work at it is essentially a franchise where the Ashley company has agreed to keep its fingers out of our business for the most part. Never would I, as a salesman, nor my manager allow for something like that to happen. If the order came in wrong you wouldn't have to pay for someone else's mistake. 30% restocking is unbelievable. We only do a 10% and we always suggest you measure to make it fit and let you check out fabric swatches to be sure it looks right under your own lighting. Hell we try to help out even when people bought Ashley furniture from other retailers in the region. I've also noticed that most stores set their own prices according to the region they're in and my store tends to be lower than the surrounding ones simply because we're in a more rural area. Honestly if I had a manager that treated a customer like that I'd walk out. I've done it before with other businesses I've worked for. I don't tolerate bad management and dishonesty. I'm not trying to defend anyone in this, definitely not Jedlowski. Again I can't speak for any store but my own. I'm just saying that not all Ashley stores are the same. Don't judge the whole carton on a few bad eggs, as cheesy as that sounds.

Michael Jedlowski has to be one of the best hucksters I've ever worked for. He has a great number of people snowed. His upper management staff is rewarded handsomely for their efforts, with trips, rent, motorcycles etc. The store managers that show compassion for customer concerns are repremanded for being too nice to people. I've seen good managers fired. Good, honest and expierienced sales people can't believe how customers are treated. They don't care if you return to purchase again. There are so many people moving in the valley and the bombardment of tv and newspaper advertising is second to none. They spend a lot of money trying to get the comsumer in the store but virtually none to keep as a customer. Many honest salespeople have quit because the Jedlowski Cult. His general manager Jim Ferstenberg is nothing more than a henchman with napolean complex. I could go on and on but I have to get to work for the company I left Ashley for.

I can't believe Ashley would let Jedlowski run their business in AZ, or anywhere for that matter. I agree with your comments about him....he was dishonest and deliberately harmful to me when he worked in the Ashley corp office in Arcadia WI

Jedlowski is a snake

#17Consumer Comment

Fri, April 15, 2005

Michael Jedlowski (the man in charge of ALL the Ashley home stores in Arizona) is a snake. He's about as low as they get. I know many people that are former employees of Ashley home stores (from now on referred to as AHS) in Arizona, and they all say the same thing. One man I know is a former salesperson with AHS and he has never had a good thing to say about the company, their higher management, or how they do business. Another is a former customer service manager for AHS, who agrees. He told me that AHS had him working 6 and a half days a week, amounting to about 70 hours a week. He was only allowed to make and receive customer service related calles during a three hour time period each day. This, as you can imagine, resulted in an ever-growing list of customer complaints and service issues. Bottom line, AHS doesn't care about their customers and to top it off, they sell crappy furniture at inflated margins. BEWARE of ANYTHING you purchase from AHS, or any other Ashley furniture dealer, for that matter. I cannot speak for the customer service of all Ashley dealers, but I can speak for the quality of the product. IT IS CRAP! If you have any problems with ANYTHING from AHS, be prepared to spend a lot of time and effort trying to get your particular issue resolved. It isn't a question of "if" you will have problems with the furniture, it is a question of "when".
