Bally Total Fitness recently instituted a change to the temperature of their gyms, apparently to save money. They have ordered all their gyms to set their thermostats at 76 degrees, which (in the summer) results in an actual temperature inside the gym into the 80s or even 90. I have become overheated and faint while exercising and cannot utilize my gym membership. I have also noticed other members who are flushed, sweating profusely and dropping weights as the equipment is covered in sweat.

This is a very unsafe, unhealty and unsanitary situation for members. I spoke with the staff at the gym location I belong to and they told me they cannot do anything about the temperature as it was ordered by "corporate" that they raise the thermostat to 76. I called the corporate customer service dept 5 times between 7/7/09 and 7/30/09 stating my complaint each time and asking that either the thermostat be lowered back to an acceptable setting, or my annual membership dues of $115.56 be refunded as I cannot utilize my membership. Each time I called, I was told by the rep on the phone that he/she could not do anything, but that he would have a supervisor return my call in 2-5 business days. Each time, nobody returned my call. It was not until I threatened to file a complaint with the BBB that a supervisor returned my call. He confirmed that corporate did order the temp increase at all their gyms and that they would not lower the temperature, despite the complaints they are receiving. He also told me they will not refund my money. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and the FTC and am posting my story on as many complaint boards as I can to hopefully deter others from joining this gym!

Also, note that Bally's has filed for bankruptcy again and given the way they treat their customers, I won't be surprised if they close down completely soon.

God forbid you "sweat" while you're working out at a gym.

Hi Patty,

I'm sorry to hear about your concerns regarding the temperature of the health club(s) you work out in.  We want you to love Bally and keep coming back because you think its a great value and workout experience.

Our club's thermostats should be set at 74 degrees - which is industry standard.  In some cases the thermostats may be located in areas, such as a hallway, that cause "hot spots" in other areas of the club.

Since you didn't mention which club(s) you work out at, would you please provide me with the location(s) and any other specifics that will help us identify the problem (i.e. area of the club, time of day, etc.)?

I will forward this information to the Market Manager and OVP so they can send someone out to measure the temperature and adjust the thermostats accordingly.

Please let me know,

All the Best,

Beth Williams
