I went online and realized my checking account was negative for $4.23, which was clearly my oversight. I immediately called the bank which i held online for 45 minutes to get a representative that did not speak clear english.

"Rudy" advised me that my account will be charged for 4 overdraft fees, due to the negative 4.23, even though this was my available balance first of all and not my actual balance of over 50something dollars. at 8am the next morning I went to the bank to try to rectify my $4.23 balance and make a deposit. I discuss my problem with a bank rep, "Amanda" which advises me that if I make a deposit, now this will avoid any charges that may occur. IF THEY DO, she will make sure this is fixed. I now have complete confidence in "Amanda", my new friend. I make a deposit of $100.00 to ensure that this is fully taken care of, and there is no longer any cause to worry. Off to work I go... Later that afternoon, I get online at work and find that 5 overdraft fees have occured and now my $100 deposit is now gone. I am at this point $-78.00 !! what the freakin' hell?? I call the bank, My new friend is with another banking customer, (probably signing away their life in blood) So I now leave work, to head over to discuss this issue with Amanda. I get to the bank and she was just about to call me back-(how much faith should I put in this statement) she says she will refund 1 chargeback. well, I tell her- at this point we are treading on not being friends anymore, that I think that this is unacceptable. she had originally advised me to just put in 20.00 and it would be fine! well, the bank ate my 100.00 and still was hungry!!!!! I am livid mad at this point. how dare she go back on her word and not fix this? when I asked her what it would cost to bring my account back current, she said that it would be another 15.00 - I advised her that i was planning on cancelling my account I had held with them over 3 years, and I was not recommending them to anyone else as I had done in the past to everyone. I even had my boyfriend, who was sitting next to me at the time, come in and get an account with them- (if he plans on continuing our relationship he will be cancelling his as well) She stated that she would not reimburse 2 of the charges that she was so willing to do for me if I decieded to close the account after this she "so gracously helped me"- are these people whacked?

this escalated into needing a manager, who conveniently was not there. She would take my number and have her call me back. Pissed off, I go back to work, completely unproductive since all I can think about is my new Arch enemy "Amanda" ... I call the 800# trying to get some help from maybe a new person that will understand the situation and not be a complete and total nutbag. I get Richard. Everso willing to waive 1 overdraft fee, but I am on my own for the other 4. well, as I explain to richard that will still leave me in the red, and I will just end up with another one from the negative balances of today. I ask to speak to a supervisor. Richard comes back to the phone, and says that his supervisor is unavailable although he has reviewed my account and they will reimburse me for 2 and a half of the charges. this will bring my account in the positive of $1.63 --- well, isnt that great!!! nevermind about the $100 deposit I have made earlier- that was gone. I have yet to see my reimbursements from Richard at extension 81567-...

I Wouldn't Be So Hard on Amanda

I guess to begin with, the actual balance in your account is a meaningless number for you because it doesn't count the number of debits pending, the number of checks outstanding, deposits pending, etc.... The only balance trhat counts is the available balance - that was negative and that's all that matters. The other more sinister truth is that the balance was actually much more negative than $4.23 you claim - otherwise you would not have incurred an additional 5 overdraft charges for whatever the charges happened to be. The truth is that there is little Amanda can do - she was probably under the impression that there might be one additional charge coming through - maybe two. Now how would she have gotten that impression? In any case, there would have been no way for her to waive 5 NSF charges without being fired by her manager. The manager generally limits such recoveries to no more than 2 charges. The lesson here is as follows: 1. NEVER rely on any online balance to tell you what your available balance is. If you're managing your funds properly, you're keeping an accurate written register of your transactions. If you're not keeping one - do it. 2. Limit your debit card transactions to larger transactions only ($20 or more) and use cash for everything less. You will limit the bank to access your money; if you do overdraft, it will be 1 transaction - maybe 2. You won't get 5 hitting you at one fell swoop. What happened to you would happen at any bank; so switching banks is of little value. Just do those things and you'll be fine. Best of luck to you......
