My Toshiba Laptop broke near the end of its' 3 year extended warranty. Best Buy has held it hostage now into the third month, hoping that the warranty will expire before repairs are completed (Or not completed).

They claim they can hold the machine forever if necessary while awaiting parts to fix it. Latest part needed is a "Restore Disk" which is not part of the machine, but a service CD. Every repair facility should have this, but I guess Best Buy is too small to have one available.

They have yet to address the problems with my machine. The display is defective and expensive to replace. So they are just dragging their heels on the repairs and not fixing the display while waiting for the warranty to expire.

The Corporate Customer Service Supervisor (Matt Lauer) told me today there is no "Estimated time to repair" available and that they "Reset the clock" on awaiting parts to zero each time a part is ordered. It does not matter... they at one point ordered a plastic cover and at another a screw. So delays are infinte with no end to repair ever, if they think the real repair and parts will be expensive.

I paid $250 for the extended warranty... yet they keep saying that they will do the repairs "For Free". They have offered to return the machine to me, "BROKEN" and pro-rate the warranty cost. Great business... wish I could collect money that way!!! Charge people for something, not perform then give them a small percentage back.

DO NOT BUY PERFORMANCE SEVICE PLAN FROM BEST BUY.

As long as your laptop entered the work area before the warrentee was up then you will be covered no matter how long they have it. You have an old laptop so they may not be able to find or may not even have a rescue disk on hand for your particular brand of laptop. Think how many machines they have at any Best Buy and then double for a reset once a year and lastly triple that for the 3 years and thats how many cd's they would have to keep. It ends up being a hefty figure, plus you can always count on someone to lose itor take it home. Its also possible that the manufacturer no longer carries that exact model and getting the cd requires a huge effort on their part. Lastly I would insist that they repair it and then compensate you for the huge amount of time you have been without the use of the laptop. Keep calling and enquiring when your laptop will be ready, start calling once a week then ramp it up to twice and then 3 until you are calling every day or twice a day. They will complete your repairs pretty soon then!
