On Black Friday 11/23/2007 I purchased a SONY Camacorder DCR-DVD108 from BestBuy. When I was in the store, I asked a Bestbuy employee what was the difference between SONY DCR-DVD108 and DVD308. He told me the zoom level was different and DVD308 had a socket to attach an extra light but DVD108 not. DVD108 was on sale, so I purcahsed that one. After I came back home, I researched on the Internet and found out that the DVD108 model had lower resolution than DVD308. It is not what I want. Today (11/24/2007) I decided to return. I was unware that my wife opened the box. She did not open anything else (battery, DVD, and so on), just the big box to take a look of the Camacorder (broke the tape on the box).

The item was 320.00 and they were going to charge me a 15% restocking fee, about 48.00 + tax. I talked to the manager and told them noboby read the tiny words on the back of the receipt and nobody read the words on the board over the Customer Service counter before he/she decided to return purchase. Does anybody go to a Store's Customer Service to read its policy before he/she buy anything? This policy is really unfair to consumers. BestBuy sells products in higher price than other stores. They must take the risk of unsatisfaction of their customers.

You all are missing the big picture.

The big picture is this, 15% is way to much to charge for a restocking fee. And if you think they can't sell this as new, then you are into the egg nog. They pay some shme minimum wage to look in the box and see if it is complete. Restocking is a profit maker, just like extended warranties. This isn't rocket science, Charging 15% because your product didn't perform the way you wanted is ridiculous. I can't wait for the day when Wal-Mart pushes jerks like these out of business. Say what you want about Wal-Mart, they have an excellent return policy, and Sam said "The customer comes first."

just because one employee was incorrect or not completely thourough about the difference between two models of camcorders does not mean that all of best buy is bad. in my experience as a retail employee and as a consumer, best buy is incomparable. they offer competitive prices with maximum service benefits and minimal hassle. also for those looking for employment they offer competitive wages with an excellent employee discount of whole sale plus 5 percent.

No restocking fee on exchanges

Best Buy has a restocking fee for returns only. If you were exchanging for the new camcorder there should not have been a restocking fee. It was unclear whether or not that is what you are doing. As for the policies, every store has different policies that work well for that particular business. Best Buy has a restocking fee to prevent people from buying items simply for a short time such as graduations or vacations, and then returning them to the store. These items are typically the ones that the store does not make very much money on, and are marked down once someone returns them as an "open box item". Basically, if you were charged a restocking fee on a camcorder that you purchased after you were given false information, then you shouldn't have been charged regardless of whether or not you exchanged for a different camcorder. Hope this helps.

An open box is an open box....it does not matter if it is "only the outter box". You should always make your purchases after doing research on a product. Never make a decision at the store on something, otherwise you may have a problem. Had you researched the products first, you would have known what you wanted. You also would be able to see what the return policy is. It does not matter that you didn't get a warning on tape. Look at your receipt - it is on there. It is also posted in more than one place in each store. BTW.....Best Buy is not the only store that has a restocking fee. Many do. You cannot honestly expect someone to beleive that it is ok for someone to buy something, open the box, and then return it for a full refund. The store CANNOT sell the item as a new item once it has been opened. It does not matter if you only "looked" at it.

The item comes with a bag, 10 DVD-R and a camacorder. All of them are in a big box. No any tape on the big box. The camacorder is in a small box that is within the big box. There is a SONY tape sealing the small box. My wife broke that one. There is NO WARNING MESSAGE near that tape or on that tape, otherwise wy wife would not open it.

don't worry about the superhi res. it uses up more memory and mainly used for poster size print outs. i have several cameras and have never had any use for the highest resolution. 150 to 300 dpi is fine for home printing. anything over 3 megapixels is and overkill. if you do photoediting, then the superhi res will come in handy. -a|ex

I do not know how many poeple read the tiny words on the back of the receipt, but I can say very few read the words on the board over the Customer Service counter before he/she decided to return purchase. If someone read the tiny words on the back of the receipt, I would say he/she is a careful buyer. I usually do not. I do read it when some companies put their policies on the front of the receipt. I usally do reseach before I buy something, but this time I did not. I admit I was too rush. Anyway, I learned a lesson. I will NEVER go to BestBuy. BestBuy sells products in much higher price than other stores. Peter King of Prussia, Pennsylvania U.S.A

I to went to Best Buy friday and purchased a sony camera at a good price. It was one of the "door buster" deals, it had a piece of tape on it that said theer would be a 15% restock fee if the box was opened. I do not know about your box for sure but they did put the tape on mine.

You have to read the fine print.

Especially if you're not sure about the item you are purchasing and there is a chance you may be returning it. You could also try asking somebody what the return policy is, but don't go by their word, find out for yourself. Yes I do read that fine print or read store policies if i'm not sure what they are or too make sure there have not been any changes. You can't say "noboby read the tiny words on the back of the receipt and nobody read the words on the board over the Customer Service counter before he/she decided to return purchase" because I do. The policy you just described is centrally located so people who are ignorant or can't read won't try to scam the store. Besides you should make your wife pay the restocking fee, she's the one who opened the box. Gabriel

It is fair

It is a fair policy. You blaim your wife saying she only cut the tape to look at the camera. To look at it, "she" also took it out of the box and unwrapped it, unwrapped the battery etc. The inside the box wrappings are simple to put back. I wouldn't want to be the next person to buy it without a big discount because I have no idea if while only looking "your wife" dropped it or she forgot to pack something back in the box..
