Oh my god! This sounds sooo familiar. The kids that come around selling these overpriced subscriptions are always the nicest people. I get a few of them each year and simply wonder why with the gift of gab they have, why they don't they don't realize they could make a million dollars somewhere else? I wish I could sell 1/10 as well as these kids! They are just so darn likable. A few years back a young guy came, gave me the contest or college story (can't remember exactly) and talked me into three years of Rolling Stone...still haven't got a single issue. I Saw on 20/20 or something where these kids are basically slaves to these programs and for each sale make like $2-3 dollars to pay for their "room and board" at the motel 6 - after a 10 hour day. Now, when those "nice" kids come around, I don't say a word and use all my strength to just shut the door - otherwise I know I'd be talked into it all over agian. The last one that came was stunned when I started to close the door - he said "you're not willing to help me out" - to that I simply replied "nope" Felt kinda good in a mean way :)
