Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I had them do a brake check on my vehicle (2001 Pontiac Grand AM) and they came back telling me that basically my brakes were in need of dire repair. (Actually I should say Keith the very friendly and helpful manager, they do that when they want your money). Not only were they in dire need of repair but the mounting hardware, the brake calipers, the rotors, the brake lines... EVERYTHING had to be replaced because my brakes were at about 15% and they could not machine my rotors...

So please tell me BrakeMax my brake pads were still under warranty through Brakes Plus in Phoenix. I was just checking the wear on them to find out they were bad. How is this possible? Almost 95% of the miles on my car are highway miles! Your not trapping this consumer in your plot! You have lost my business forever and hopefully those who read this in the future will be cautious for the following reason:

Immediately after receiving this rediculous quote in excess of 800 dollars I decided it wise to consult with other local shops in town. First I went to Brake Masters. They reported my brake pads were in good condition and still had about 50% on them. They told me to come back later that they have a lot of miles on them. I at first thought, who is pulling my chain here?

Next I went to Midas to get a third quote. They also reported the same findings as Brake Masters. Brake Max you will never ever touch my car again rest assured! Keith I hope someone scams you like you tried to scam me!

Brakepads were replaced. It is now 09-03-09... still going on the SAME rotors these clowns told me I needed to replace. Amazing huh? The new pads are at about 95%.... thought I would post an update incase anyone comes accross this. It will be time to replace my rotors here soon. I have finally had Midas tell me it was about time to get them replaced. I will of course get a second opinion.

Let me repeat several years after the first posting. I will never... ever... ever again take my vehicle to Brakemax again.

By the way my girlfriend sold her car 2 months ago. The 3,000 dollars in repairs that were needed were never found by the dealer that took the car for trade-in and the repairs were never done or needed.

Good job Brakemax!

So, It is now 12-17-2008. I thought I would post an update on my vehicle. I took my vehicle into the shop and was told I finally needed to replace my brakes. This was 4 months ago. Amazingly this report was filed in 2007. So I had my brakes replaced and to my amazement they actually re-surfaced my rotors!!! A year later! My girlfriend went into brakemax with her vehicle today, she thought it was brake masters I had the problem with... for a simple oil change and they reported her vehicle needs $3000+ in work! I guess this is why I am updating this. Most of the stuff on the repair list looks to be near impossible to be bad. This is going to be awesome! I am going to have my ASE Certified Master Mechanic buddy look at her car and confirm the damage... he also confirmed my brakes and rotors were fine several months before I replaced them.... more to come... So.. my brakes and rotors were bad and not legally allowed to be machined but the dealership I took the car to did it for me? A+ BrakeMax!

I will also never again visit Brake Max. I had a similar experience. Went to get new pads on a 3 year old Accent and was told it needed a complete brake job, caliper, rotors, pads, etc. I said okay, acknowledging that the care needed it, not acknowledging to have it done. Well after roughly four hours later I get a bill for over $800 for putting on new brake pads. The owner said no, we did the entire brake assembly. I said I didn't authorize that, but what could I do it was done? I was really pissedA 3-year old car does not have this type of problem and I even had the bumper-to-bumper 100K warranty! In my anger, he offered me a free oil change! Wow, that really made me happy - happy enough to never go there again. It was the Brake Max at Kolb and Golf Links in Tucson. Well at least I know now how they able to afford all that advertising they do!

I am glad to hear that out of 486699 + - inhabitants of Tucson that roughly 14% of Tucson uses your repair services. That is fantastic! Or is it? Maybe there is a reason for that and no one else has disputed their issues with you guys. Check out BBB Online. The BBB processed a total of 28 complaints about this company in the last 36 months, our standard reporting period.Of the total of 28 complaints closed in 36 months, 11 were closed in the last year. Ok... not too bad. Sundevil auto has a much worse track record in Phoenix. But not much. And by the way... I have the paper "unofficial quote" (They write out unofficial quotes so as to avoid being confronted in the event they are discovered i'm guessing)... In my glovebox still if you would like. It reads well over your stated quote trust me... It is even in Keiths penmanship if you would like to get it analyzed by a handwriting analyst. You shouldn't have to stay awake at night. With all that extra income generated by charging people 2 times what you should be and on parts that do not need to be replaced you could be making a killing! There are lots of vulnerable people out there while you sleep in that nice big house and have all those business assets. I am not the only one with issues folks, I have coworkers / friends with similar complaints about this company. I did not find this out until discussing my experience with them. Perhaps Brake Masters and Midas are lying about my brakes being 100% fine with brake hardware being intact as well. Maybe Brakes Plus who did my brakes last time really did not replace the hardware on the brakes? Not likely. Wouldn't the other two brake places note this? It doesn't matter... all I asked is that anyone who has work done on their vehicle get a second quote. It seperates the honest from the dishonest. Its the internet amigo. Do you want me to publish my SSN and street address? Maybe post some information about my schedule next week? It would be foolish to post personal information online. Besides you know who I am why do you need it? Weeding me out of those 65,000 customers was easy. If you guys did your job I would not be here. Think about that. Why would I feel so upset as to waste my time on this site posting a bad experience with your company. You have lost my trust completely. Not that it matters; there are a lot of folks out there that empty their wallets who neglect to get a second quote and do their research. If any consumers get anything out of this ranting I sure hope they remember the words "second quote". GET ONE! No matter what automotive shop you go to. Knowledge is power. 65,000 other customers must be wrong?

#6REBUTTAL Owner of company

Mon, November 26, 2007

I was alerted to this complaint and this site from a friend and found it to be very interesting. This customer didn't list his name but after researching the situation, I discovered who it was. I am co-owner of 11 shops in Tucson, we service about 8000 vehicles each month. Keith's store is our highest volume store and in the 8 years he has managed his shop, has had about 65,000 satisfied customers. We certainly aren't perfect, we do receive some complaints from time to time, most of the time those customers come to us for a solution and don't post anonymous complaints such as this. I will keep my reply brief as I really have to consider the source of this complaint and not lose too much sleep over this 1 dissatisfied "customer". We did quote a brake job. The pads were not worn out, our work order noted 25% pad remaining on one side and 50% on the other. This was an approximation. We also noted that some of the front disc hardware was missing. Part of a brake job includes machining the rotors. The rotors measured out at .994" and 1.000" thick. Legal minimum thickness on this vehicle is .970" with suggested "machine to" specifications listed at .987". That leaves .007" and .013" available to turn on the lathe, not enough thickness to true. So, yes, we did quote a brake job on a car that still had some pad material remaining. We are in the business to repair cars. If we get involved in a repair, we do the job right. In this case, that would mean replace the hardware and the rotors. We also suggested cleaning and adjusting the rear brakes as part of the job (we included this in the estimate although we actually did in fact perform this service at no charge while the vehicle was in the shop). We also suggested a brake fluid flush as maintenance. We also offered to warranty his brake pads for him with proof of purchase from the repair shop in Phoenix that did his original work! This customer certainly had the option of saying "No", which he did. His only charge was the installation of the fuel filter, which he provided. By the way, this job was quoted out at $447 + tax (and would have been less had we warranted his brake pads as was offered), not in "excess of 800 dollars" as this customer incorrectly claimed. This complaint also noted that 95% of the mileage on this car was highway miles. The car is 6 years old and has 80,000 miles on it. I hope that anyone interested in this complaint will consider the source. Sometimes, complaints are legitimate. When they are, we handle them and learn from our mistakes. Complaints that have to resort to lies to try and get a point across are hardly worth the effort this took. I planned on keeping this brief, thanks for allowing us the opportunity to reply to this.
