Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
To make a long (and I do mean LONG) story short, I made 2 deposits before 2 pm so that my deposit would be made on the same business day. They did not count my deposit untill several days later causing my debit card to show Invalid for NSF when I tried to make a purchase. I talk to a Branch Manager who smiles at me and tells me to check there 24 hr number after 12 am. (There are no opperators available after 12 am)

Then as if that wasn't bad enough. They held the purchase amount from my account even after the transaction was canceled, causing me to have a negative balance. All this after I had made 2 deposits for well over the purchase amount. I call the bank and they tell me that when you make a deposit, You cannot use the funds untill the next day or after 12 am nomatter what. Also, that if I make a deposit after 2pm, those funds are not available till 12am 2 days later.

With this knowledge I take a personal check from my mother from her bank and ask them to cash it. They told me that because I didn't have the amount of the check in my account that they would not cash it! Are they searious? Isn't this why you get a bank account???

And now I go to get this straightened out, and they think it's funny, and tell me that I have to wait on my deposits 1 to 2 business days from now on!

"ALL BANKS" DO NOT DO THIS...

My credit union makes funds available immediately after I deposit them if I go into the branch and by 8 PM if I deposit through the ATM on a weekday. The only time they have ever put anything on hold was a three-day "out of area" hold on a check from a bank in Georgia. Even Bank of America made my funds available almost immediately. BB&T sounds almost as predatory as Washington Mutual. They would put payroll checks on hold for 9-11 business days, but so "generously" pay everything that came in at $21 a pop. That was an extremely short business relationship. Try your local credit union...much more like a small town bank than "corporate" banks.

Permitted NOT REQUIRED.

Yeah, they are permitted to hold your check, but BB&T told me that they are REQUIRED by Federal Law to hold my check, and the funny thing is my other bank, USAA, don't have that REQUIREMENT, which I told them as I was closing my account. It's not REQUIRED, it's allowed. My suggestions, go to a different bank immediately, and ask about their policy.

It is not the bank--all banks have a similar policy

All banks have a funds availability policy. Your bank has, from what you describe, a generous policy of making funds deposited available the following business day. Some banks, and credit unions, will hold funds deposited for up to 5 days as is permitted by federal banking law. The only funds generally made available immediately are cash deposits. If your deposits were in cash, and made with a teller, not an ATM, you may have a chance at recovering your fees. Otherwise, you are a victim not of your financial institution, but of the federal banking system. When you open a checking account, you are given a copy of the policy. And this is not new, but has been law for many years. Good luck.
