I used Hotwire to make a car reservation recently on a trip home to visit family.  I had a week long reservation but unfortunately had a family (older brother) member pass away while I was home necessitating a longer stay to attend the viewing and funeral.  My airline (Southwest) changed my reservation without any trouble, not charging me anything for the change.  The car rental company (Budget) charged me over $300 ($80.00 per day!) for the additional days citing the fact that I had used Hotwire and they wouldn't honor the same daily rate.  The customer service rep basically said "that's what you get for renting through them!"  I explained that not only was it a family emergency, I didn't even get the same size car when I picked it up.  I had rented a full size SUV (Jeep Grand Cherokee or similar) and because they "couldn't find the keys to that car", forced me to accept a much smaller car (Jeep Wrangler) without any adjustment in the cost!!  This is an absolutely HORRIBLE company and I have removed them from my company's list of preferred vendors because of their attitude towards customer service.

If there's an attorney out there with a lean towards a class action, count me in!
