The vehicle owner is supposed to check the vehicle's fluids weekly. Other items are checked daily. You obviously do neither. If you had simply opened the hood, and checked the oil level, you would never have been more than 1 qt low. When toil dipstick shows the oil level at the "add" mark, add 1 qt of the proper grade of oil. Your own negligence caused your issue.
