A current postcard mailing by Buyer's Edge (B.E.) informed us that "your current membership term is due to expire and will automatically renew...unless we hear from you." Well, this dramatic notice from a company of which we had never become a member in the first place, caused us to scour our credit card statements for the last two years. In doing so we caught an 11 month-old unauthorized B.E. charge for $149.99.

I called their 866 phone number and immediately got a pleasant operator. I quickly cancelled my "membership" and asked for a refund of the November 2007 unauthorized membership charge. The operator talked with her "supervisor" and then told me that our card would receive a credit of $15.17. I said no, I wanted the entire $149.99 returned to our account.

After an additional 5-second conference with her "supervisor," the operator returned and said "OK." So it looks like B.E. is set up to quickly reverse these unauthorized charges, but you definately have to ask, it is not automatic. By the way, the catalog vendors that have teamed up with B.E. claim that after purchasing merchandise by telephone, the customer is often enticed into a 30-day free trial membership with B.E. Unknown, or swallowed up in the small talk is the warning that the customer will be automatically billed for the membership, if not actively cancelled (by the customer) after the 30-day period. Then the monthly or yearly membership charges can begin.
