We picked up our blue male puppy in May 2010. We will keep this short and specific as we have no contact with other Niobrara owners and can not speak for anyone else's experience. From day one our puppy was having digestive issues. Trish was helpful in responding with kibble recommendations. However, Titan's food allergies proved severe as we tried the highest quality kibble we could possibly find. Our boy, Titan was losing his hair, getting "acne" on his face and back, having chronic diarrhea and becoming extremely thin. Eventually, after multiple vet trips and food replacements we found that only a narrow raw diet (very expensive where we live) with top of the line probiotics and essential fatty acids was the only thing his system can (mostly) handle.  It has corrected much of his skin and fur, acne and weight problems- however, we still struggle with his GI sensitivity overall.

On a second note, he was diagnosed with cherry eye and entropion while still very young. He has had two cherry eye tacking surgeries to try to correct this, and the second surgery (done by the best ophthalmologist specialist in NYC) included taking skin from his eyebrows and tacking some of his skin further up on his face to allow him to see and prevent complications from entropion. The second cherry eye surgery was unsuccessful as the specialist said it was one of the most difficult cases she had operated on. We did send a picture of Titan to Trish to let her know that he had cherry eye - the vets have told us it is genetic and we wanted to be sure the breeder could make a responsible decision about this bloodline's future breeding program based on our experience. We did not hear back from her, nor did we pursue her as there is nothing we are looking for from her. We love our dog and would never want to replace him. His temperament is great, he is large 140lbs and not done growing, 34.5" tall, seemingly healthy hips and heart.

However, given the severity of these known genetic issues and the far greater expense associated with treating a dog with cherry eye, entropion and skin and food allergies we will be looking elsewhere for our next great dane pup. He is a great dog (and we wouldn't trade him for the world), but these issues can hopefully be addressed so more puppies and parents don't experience the same. Attached is a current picture, the surgeon took as much of the cherry eye out as she could while still leaving the important functioning gland and they are still huge. You are able to see his eyes however because of the eyebrow tacking mentioned earlier.
