I purchased a franchise that was a CFA listed member, only to discover that the CFA designation is actually meaningless.

The franchisor fragrantly broke laws, ignored the rules, and certainly did not follow the "CFA Code of Conduct" in any way.

When I filed a complaint with the CFA, my franchise agreement was terminated without cause - per the CFA - the complainant is advised of the complaint against them, which is not unreasonable, but you can see that it offers me - the complainant, no protection.  How convenient for them.

Now I am left to battle said franchisor, and the CFA does nothing.  In fact, this company - even though they are in clear violation of Canadian Franchise law, is still a member organization.  On follow up to the complaint, I was told that they do not "publicly disclose the outcome of their investigations".

You should be warned in advance that the only criteria that the CFA has to be a member is that you pay your membership bill annually.

If you are interested in purchasing a franchise, you are probably best off to avoid using the CFA as a criteria.  They do NOT and will NOT represent you and your interests.  Their only interest is seeing that their pockets are lined monthly.

The CFA is nothing more than organized crime with a logo.  Steer clear of this organization.

Don't buy a franchise, start your own company.  It's not worth the hassle.

Naive Franchise Owners do not research then blame franchisors

#2Consumer Suggestion

Thu, April 28, 2011

I don't want to be mean, but someone this naive really should not own a business, franchised or otherwise.  I mean, are you seriously surprised that an industry trade organization that represents and is paid for by franchisors has a meaningless Code of Conduct?

Imagine how amazed you're going to be to learn that the advertising-fueled Entrepreneur magazine's Franchise 500 rankings praise and never criticize the franchisors who buy full-page ads!  Outright scams get accolades because they pay the bills.

If you have a legitimate gripe, you should post a complaint against the FRANCHISOR both here and on (((ROR REDACTED))) and report it to the proper authorities.  Complaining that a marketing and/or lobbying organization isn't a stern watchdog of business ethics simply discredits you as an astute businessperson.
