I was a PhD student at Capella.  I was pleased with Capella during the courswork phase, but I hit a brick wall once I got to the Comprehensive Exam phase. I failed the Comp Exam.  I've always considered myself a strong writer, so I couldn't figure out why after writing A/B papers in each class and having a 3.7 GPA that they wait until the Comp Exam to telll me I don't know how to write on a doctoral level.

The problem is Capella didn't properly prepare me for the Comp Exam - I was setup for failure. A writing course was not built into the coursework. The class instructors should have been evaluating papers on the level they evaluate on for Comp Exams.  This would have prepared me for the Comp Exam.  Writing courses were available, but why would I take one if I thought I already knew how to write?  A writing course should have been required, not optional.

After I failed the Comp Exam, Capella recommended I take a writing course, which I did.  Well, I failed the second time I took the Comp Exam.  I couldn't learn everything I needed to know about doctoral writing in one class ... it's a process.  After failing the Comp Exam the second time, I was given two options: enter another Capella degree program or be withdrawn from the school.

They denied my request to enrolled in their DBA program, so it really wasn't an option at all.  After so much time, effort and money, Capella withdrew me.  Now I'm repaying a large student loan with nothing to show for it.  I paid Capella a lot for my education, then during the Comp Exam phase, they pretty much said "thank you for your money" and slammed the door in my face.

I can't speak for other online universities, but I would not recommend Capella to anyone.  Before attending an online university, research traditional schools.  It's 2014 ... many public universities offer full and/or partial online programs.
