After listening to the shopping ambassador on board Holland america Lines ship the Westerdam and being informed by her that buying diamonds are considered only minerals and that there would be no duty charge, I did my fair share of shopping at the Holland America recommended store of Diamonds International.

I bought a Blue Diamond Tennis bracelet that had a sticker tag of $20,000+.  After some negotiation (with the help of Kim, our "shopping ambassador") an agreed price of $5,500.00 was come to.

Today I went to my personal jeweler to have it appraised...according to him, I should have spent NO MORE than $1,500.00.   This is just unbelievable.  I can not believe that this store has not been stopped.  As far as I am concerned they have robbed me of $4,000.00 and there does not seem to be away to get it back.

We have filed a complaint with our credit card company and they are going to try to go after them.

Been in the jewelry business 25+ years. See this once in a while. Had a customer buy a ring for $2,700 when she went on a cruise but NOT from a DI store. They sold it to her as a 3.00CT+ total weight ring. She brought it to me to appraise. I figured it at between ONE and 1.5ct total diamond weight and appraised it at $1,800. Her credit card company REFUNDED her the $900 difference based ON MY APPRAISAL, on the fact that the diamond weight was so much less. About the only chance you have is IF they either overstated the diamond weight OR the quality of the stones and you were given a written appraisal, you might have some grounds for a refund. Just because you paid too much, normally isn't enough for a refund. I always wonder WHY in the hell people don't buy from "their personal jeweler" instead of getting ripped off on a cruise or a vacation. I guarantee your "personal jeweler" is laughing his a*s off at your "great deal". We're the ones that have to deal with our customers year in and year out.

I doubt your credit card company will be able to do much.    You negotiated a price for the bracelet.  That's what you agreed to pay and that's what the jewelry place is going to tell the credit card company.

Anytime you buy something without doing your homework, you risk paying too much.  It doesn't mean you automatically get a "do over" if you later decide you paid too much.
