The bank doesn't know if the account will have sufficient funds at the end of the day, and if they cash a check, and the account is overdrawn and the owner of the account skips, the bank is left holding the bag. However, I disagree with this practice of charging to cash checks drawn on their own bank - I guess it will depend on state law. I know CA forbids this practice for payroll checks.
