A company that I had never heard of and never ordered from. An online company. In re: confirmation letter. Yes, I did obtain verification of my zero balance and forwarded it to them, along with all the nasty letters, and a cover letter explaining same.

Was it a preauthorized, recurring withdrawl, an ATM withdrawl, a check that you had forgotten about, an electronic debit you forgot about? Or was it a non-authorized debit? If it was a legitimate debit (perhaps you didn't change you account information with the debtor in time for them to stop the debit to your old account), why would you not have to pay them (plus fees)? Did you get a letter from Chase stating that the fraud investigation was completed and that you owe nothing? If it was verbal, it is worth the paper it is writen on. If you do have a letter from them, send a copy to the Chase Collections Dept. A closed account is not really "closed" until it remains at a zero balance for a certain period of time (I am not totally sure but I would guess at least one statement period). One week wouldn't seem long enough to make sure there are no outstanding debits against the account. Good luck.
