I arrived at the Coffee Bar at Radisson with my mother.  We were just killing time until her birthday dinner.  We ordered coffee.  I handed $100 bill to the cashier.  Coffees were picked up at the counter.  However, the guy behind the counter made a special visit to my mother at the table to serve her coffee to her.  This was while I was still at the counter to collect the rest of my money.  This was odd as no one else was getting served personally!  As I said, the rest of our order was placed at the counter and I carried it to our table, as all the other customers.

My mother has a large purse that she laid on the floor next to her seat.  Within 5-10 minutes a black guy with a leather jacket showed up and sat in the chair back-to-back with my mother's chair.  He took off his jacket and hung it at the back of the seat right behind my mother's seat.  He did not have any coffee or items from the bar.  He reached down in his coat's pocket a few times.  He then left in less than 10 minutes.  When we got up to leave a bit later (~20 min later), my Mom realized that her purse was robbed.  The Coffee Bar staff acted very cool.  We called the police.  The hotel security would not allow us to look at the video tapes from the camera at the bar.

I have no doubt this was an inside job.  I am pretty sure the staff at the Coffee Bar had something to do with this.  We were targeted from the start, specially after I gave them the $100 bill.  The fact that the black guy showed out of no where and sat right behind my Mom, robbed her purse, and left right away tells me that he was tipped off.  I did not see him at the Coffee Bar when we arrived.  I am certain he came in later.

I have seen similar operations at the San Francisco fish market where the local vendors, the police, and the thieves are all in it together.

first of all, its hard to ignore the racist overtones of the complaint.the guy with the leather jacket's race, which you've repeatedly noted is completely irrelevant to all this- you're only making yourself harder to sympathize with here. i'm sorry you're afraid of black people, but the simple fact is that folks of every size, shape and color steal things. particularly things of value that aren't being watched.

secondly, while a healthy caution is advised, especially in cities like philadelphia, its patently absurd to say "I have no doubt this is an inside job. I am pretty sure the staff at the coffee bar had something to do with this." first of all, you implicate the entire staff. how many people were working? 2? 3? so you mean to tell me that 2 or 3 staff members, plus your racially profiled thief, split the contents of your wallet between them? i don't know exactly what they pay there, but

that doesn't exactly sound like a viable conspiracy theory. unless you're carrying a briefcase full of hundreds, its hard to imagine an organized team of thieves finding this sort of thing worthwhile. furthermore, as a coffee bar regular, i can tell you that they bring drinks to everybody who sits down after placing an order "for here."

and the part where you mention "i have seen similar operations at the San Francisco fish market where the local vendors, the police, and the thieves are all in it together"? lets reflect on that for a minute. you're trying to tell me that there's a conspiracy so elaborate as to involve the police, and you somehow managed to figure it all out with your super-sleuthing? who are you, Hercule Poirot? let me guess- you took this revelation to the police, and they didn't buy it, so you assumed them to be part of the plot against you. i wasn't a psych major, but i don't think it takes one to spot the paranoia here. seek help.
