My wife and I traveled to Hawaii (after selling almost all of our possessions at a loss) to be a part of a project presented by Collin Eckles and Sophia Cheng. Once we arrived after this huge tradition, the project started to go downhill.
Promises that were made to entice us moving half way around the world were quickly rescinded. The project was to open and operate a bed and breakfast Collin owned. It was not until 8 months after our arrival that we learned Collin was not he only person on the title.
He only mentioned her to say she was the reason the project was shutting down and we needed to vacate the property in 2 weeks, the day before Thanksgiving. Through the course of this project we saw Collin stiff contractors (fence installers, electricians, photographers, and friends he made financial promises to for their labor on the property.)
When we arrived he told us of past contractors and housekeeper who had stolen from him. We later learned these people style because they were continuing to work for him without getting paid and receiving only false promises of payment until they finally helped themselves to payment once they got tired of his lies.
My wife and I were paid a grand total of $133.97 for the 8 months of our effort. But since we were not reimbursed fully for expenses related to servicing guests and improving the property, we actually lost money. The project failed because Collin was the self appointed project manager, which seemed logical since he told us he had done this before with a property a 611 Mildred Ave in Venice, CA, has years of project management experience, and works as a consultant.
I can say this was the most disorganized and incompetent management I have ever seen. Collin talks a big game and sounds like he knows what he’s talking about until you know more about a subject and realize he is full of sh*t about the majority of what he says and his confidence is in no way an indication of his knowledge on a subject.
I hope people looking to hire him as a consultant read this and look elsewhere for sound advice. We would go weeks without a word from our business partners as texts and voicemails went unanswered even when we had a call scheduled each day. These disappearances were most noticeable when it was time for them to reimburse us for expenses.
The project was finally hitting profits in October and when it came time to pay us on the profit share, Collin and Sophia added a bunch of line items to the budget for which they weren’t actually paying (like the HOA does they had not paid in 2 years of owning the property, to reflect a payment of only $133.97.
In addition, they said they wouldn’t reimburse us for items like coffee which we provided to guests who paid Collin directly through different booking channels like airbnb. To further insult us, they spread a rumor to mutual friends and family that we took this coffee back to the mainland to give to family members.
Not sure where they came up with this, but it is another example of two people who have no idea what they are talking about. Sophia said we spent too much on coffee, so we must have been hoarding it to take even before they told us they were ending the project. Mind you, Sophia could have mentioned this prior to the time to pay us but she had no worthwhile contributions to the project.
Even Collin, who loves with and has a baby with her, told us he didn’t want her involved because she is so difficult. Her one job was to order decor and furniture, which we all should have protested. It was easier to give her this than fight her, even though her choices were bad and hurt the business, like decorating a room in Hawaii like a bad Cinco de Mayo party that reduced occupancy in that room and resulted in guests asking us about the choice.
The project ultimately ended because the neighbors could not stand Collin lying to them about his intentions and plans. They reported him to the county for a bunch of unpermitted building he told us was legal or that he was working with the Planning Dept on. All of that was a lie. Everything with these two is a lie. Be cautious or avoid entirely.
