I am a person with a severe disability. My disability leaves me without family and friends to speak of (or with). I sometimes don't hear my own voice for days. So, my TV is an absolute necessity to help maintain my sanity.

Comcast has no regard for their low-income customers. And these customers probably make up a good portion of their customer base. I have Comcast's basic analog service at $56.95/month. I live on $650/month, and this cost of cable is a hardship, but again, a necessary one. Of course, I've had to consider limited basic and even antenna TV, but I could not live with the limited choice of channels. As it is, the number of channels worth watching on my basic cable service is shamefully few.

Cable TV should not be a 'luxury' when the alternatives are often not satisfactory. I did begin the process of switching to DirecTV, but cancelled the installation when I was charged $149 for equipment before the installers were even due to arrive at my apartment. They should not charge for equipment when it isn't yet determined if I could receive a good signal at my location. I've since read way too many horror stories online about the poor business practices of the two satellite dish companies to risk monetary loss, poor installation, or poor service.

No other options such as FiOS or XOHM seem to be available in my area, not that I could afford those services either. So, as a monopoly would happily have it, I am stuck with Comcast, and their inconceivable prices which they plan to increase yet again.

Notice that if you take away the letters, 'c', 'o', and 't' from the word Comcast, what remains are the letters that make up the word "scam"...

Keep in mind that the definitions of "scam" are: A fraudulent business scheme; a stratagem for gain; a swindle.

Comcast's business practices often fit that definition. Their 'scam' would seem to be cleverly disguised by adding three letters to their name.

It's appalling that the majority of you sit behind your screen telling this man or woman that they don't deserve the right of having cable for a cheap price. You have no clue what they have been through and I'm betting the lot of you couldn't handle a day in their shoes. You're telling this person that they don't deserve to have an outside connection to the world because their disability coverage doesn't allow them enough space to pay for food, cable, and rent? Those of you saying that they should go find a job are sick. You don't know the extent of their disability. I was in a motorcycle accident where a drunk driver hit me head on and caused my fuel tank to rupture. I received third degree burns to my hands, arms, feet, and legs. My riding gear did nothing to protect me from the flash fire. I spent 6 months at home recovering, begging to go back to work but I couldn't because of my disabilities. For those 6 months I couldn't walk up the stairs to go to the bathroom, and even if I could have, I couldn't of turned the door knob or removed my own pants. The television was my only friend when my wife wasn't home. I couldn't go outside in the sun due to my recovering skin being too sensitive to the UV rays. This person can't work, regardless or not if you internet tough guys can. Not all disabilities are the same. Now that I've healed up I am back at work and am thankful that I can get out of the house and do something instead of being confined and alone. Have any of you sat at home alone without television? Do you know how sad and depressing it is? I'm guessing you haven't. I'm betting the most of you complaining about living within' your means have everything provided for you. Now with that out of the way I'll get to comcast.

I have my own qualms with comcast and their customer service. I've been charged multiple times for service fees, 30 dollars, for them to come try and fix my cable when we have outages. Why am I paying for you to fix a service I pay for that is not being provided to me from no fault of my own? I don't have the option of getting a different cable provider and I cannot mount a dish receiver on my town house as it is against my lease. Comcast's prices are horribly high. For the price that I pay for basic I got full premium with my old provider, service electric. Sadly, like the OP states, Comcast has a stranglehold of a monopoly on it's cable lines. They jack the prices up and all we can do is either bend over and take it, or flat out cancel. The problem is comcast is recording record profits every year, so why do they keep jacking prices up? It makes no sense and it needs to be stopped.

First off noone sees my point apparently, secondly i shouldnt even be sinking to this level of nonsense. I was trying to say that of course this persons claim may be a bit much, but why is everyones response turning into some novel type lecture. Let people say what they have to say, it may bother you but its really not that serious, it's a posting. Considering the one person who responsed to mine saying" I dont have a problem with comcast" is constantly checking comcast rebutals, Im wondering why you even are here if you dont have a problem with them. Maybe you just dont have anything better to do then pick on people, frankly you can say what you want about me I could care less. I think its something to do to make you feel better about yourself, and agian I could give a crap less what you have to say about my posting, if you dont like it get over it and move on. People like you really piss me off, do you feel better now? Anyway enough on the bull of this, back to the point some people do what they do and as much as people have a problem with it it's never going to stop, so to continue writing another rebutal under this one into a chain of nonsense I think it should come to a end by now and move on. Agian.... its time to give this up, it's not going anywhere at this point.

I get my internet access from them as their price and speed are the best value for me in this area. They haven't ripped me off, in fact it has worked out rather well. They give me internet access and I pay them for it. It seems that "Lm" is engaging in the bashing that he or she is criticizing others about. FYI- I make money from my computers and internet connection. As a photographer, I spend time at the computer cataloging and editing photos, submitting proofs and filling orders. Believe it or not, it is quite possible to work and be at the computer at the same time. This is a consumer advocacy site that allows people to post their grievances anonymously. I am all for that. However, the site also allows for people to post their perspectives and to point out how a given issue may not be an actual ripoff. It is appropriate to respond to frivolous claims.

I posted earlier in this complaint and was perhaps a tad snotty and I do apologize. I cant agree more with the way these prices for cable have gone thru the roof. But then so has everything else.....and that bytes too. Like another poster.....Im curious on what the OP disability is. I understand the dilemma of being confined to the house....being alone 24/7 with no one to talk to....to converse with....to feel close to. Its daunting to realize that THIS is IT. I was there......10 years ago. Justice, Im sorry I came down hard in my earlier post....I guess I didnt mean it as harsh as it sounded. I targeted you unjustly with another in mind. I AM tired of people screaming disability and expecting us.....the working poor to support them in the way they WANT versus what they can "afford". I AM disabled.....have been for more than 10 years....but I chose to work rather than wallow in self pity and expect anything of others. It hurts to move....at all...it hurts not to.....I never dont hurt. Ive had a broken back twice...Ive had over 25 major surgeries....and was recently in a semi-truck versus my truck accident.....the semi won!!!! BUT.......I work....every day..without fail. I have never expected anyone to foot my bill.....for anything. I love being able to work and support myself...Im not whining OR complaining. So dont feel bad for me that I HAVE TO WORK..... I wouldnt have it any other way...even thru the pain and discomfort I wish you luck Justice...just remember.....ComCast is no different than any other cable company ....

We have the right to ask questions being the OP brought them up in the Comcast post. You may think it is a waste of your time and so do not feel the need to respond. Had it only been about the complaint that would be one thing, but we have the right to respond and explain so that the OP knows we are in the same shoes. It is one thing to respond, it is another to be in the same shoes and know how hard it can be to get up and put one foot in the other and force yourself to just get out of bed. However, many of us here are in that situation yet we still never expected anyone to give us discounted service. So if you do not like our stories do not read them. If you bring up a subject then expect to recieve responses. Oh, and the last time I looked, it still is a free country. Personally I love Comcast ! If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen! I know some here just wish to whine.

First off I think this whole thing is a waste of time, why does it even matter. All you people are responding to someones rebutal. If you dont agree with it keep it to yourselfs, this website is intended for actual problems with the company, granted you may feel her situation is not that serious, but Im wondering how all these people who say they work all day have the time to file these upsurd comments. I have posted a rebutal already about comcast and mine is legit. The problem with comcast is they rip people off plain and simple, I was with patroit Media before comcast bought them out. Ithink you people really need to relax on dissing this womens rebutal who really cars just leave it alone, bashing people is not going to help at all. It makes me mad that people have no lives and have to waste time on this. This is about cable tv prices and services, not a posting center for you life stories, if you want to tell one write a book, seriously....

So those who cannot afford premium TV are asking for it to be provided free? We, the working class, have been providing the "don't haves" phone service for free for a long time (check your bill for the Federal Universal Service Fee), and now the government is giving CELL phones with FREE service to those who "don't have" while I pay over $80 a month for minimum service on two lines. Congress is still kicking around the idea to give our Social Security money to illegals who haven't paid a dime into it. With catch phrases like "spread the wealth" and "it's your patriotic duty to pay more taxes" in the recent news, it's easy to see free TV service happen after January 20th. So the OP needs to keep the faith, you might have your wish very soon. Our soon-to-be socialist country will give you your hearts content if you'll just hold out. The rest of us will just gladly keep on providing the funding!!! After all, isn't that what the voice of the people stated last November 4th?

The "real" problem

#12Consumer Suggestion

The real problem to this story is your income of $656.00 a month. If you subtract the cable bill, this leaves $600.00 a month. Everybody has other bills, such as water, elecricity, FOOD. So I cannot imagine in my mind how you even pay rent, or have access to a computer to make these complaints, living on that amount of money. Comcast offers simple services, to which you agreed and accepted there services. So I do not understand how COMCAST is the real problem here. It sounds like you just do not have enough money to live a life more normal than the average house pet, and even house pets dont pay rent. The solution to your problem might be that maybe your disability isnt as serious as it may seem, and maybe you could work a job somewhere doing something, maybe like a wal-mart greeter on one of those scooters. With that, you might not have the time to watch every re-run of "Murder She Wrote". I work 10 hours a day, my wife works even more, between juggling extracurricular activities of two teenage kids. Your life to me sounds like one big vacation, especially if thats all you have to complain about is watching TV. So get out of your lazy chair, get a job, earn more money, and upgrade your cable, that is if you have time to watch tv anymore. I'm sure tv wouldnt be a priority anymore after working all day for a dollar, and having to actually deal with lifes problems.

To Justice SeekerI noticed it got quiet and you have never once said what your disablity is. I re-read the posts and on your last one, you said your disalbity is not treatable. So, once again I ask since you brought it up, what is your "disablity". I ask because their is no cure for my disablity either and I have had 45 surgeries, I live in constant horrible pain every second because my parents refused to treat my disablity. As a result I am now having to correct the damage of their neglect and their abuse to my body( such as broken bones they refused to let a doctor set etc...). I tell you these things to be honest and so you understand I understand having to live with a disablity every moment of every day. However, many of my surgeries have occured when just 3 months earlier they did not. Many of them have happened because I have doctors who refuse to say "there is nothing that can be done". They are on a misson so that I can live. So, again, what is your disablity? What have you done this week to see the beauty in the world? What have you done for someone else? You can write and send Christmas cards to children in orphanges. There are so many things you can do for other people and you will not be stuck in front of the tv, which is the last place you need to be. If you have to be then at least break it up and do other things in between so that you are not chained to the tv. I truly think that things are never "hopeless". I run a group online for people with chronic pain and they give alot of encouragement. Perhaps you could join one since there are many. It could be quiet helpful.Since you mentioned your disablity I still would like to know what it is and how that connects with Comcast because you could use your "logic" for any company. Why is it fair that Walmart charges what they do for milk? Do they not know your disabled? That is why people responded why they did.You have to break your thought pattern. Look outside the box, it really is a beautiful world.

I have two cousins who are blind. They both work outside the home, and not for companies that are designed to help the blind. They have nice TV's in their home(for sighted company) and have cable. They like certyain shows and listen to them. They can tell you about their favorite episodes. You seem to have acess to the internet, so I'll guess you are not really all that disabled after all. Being lazy is not a disability.

I ignored this report yesterday because it infuriated me so, but since it has popped up again today I can no longer ignore it. Many people live with disabilities and they decide I am not going to sit and whine. There usually is something a person can do in order to make someone ELSES life better. If you will take the focus off yourself and see how MUCH you have and how LITTLE someone else has it you would be much better off. Get a vcr and a dvd player combination then you can play both and you can pick them up cheap. There are always ways to get them and if you can not get out call a church and ask for help. There are always people who will help if you are humble and come with an open heart instead of the EXPECTATION YOU have now as though you are OWED something. Comcast is a business and I am sorry they owe you NOTHING. Either you can afford it or you can not. My 81 yr old mother lived on basic cable and refused to let me buy it why? Because she grew up with the beliefs that a person paid their own way! She only recieved $400 a month from soc security, so see there are always people worse off than you. She budgeted and still was able to buy a used vcr and watched her tapes! She had hundreds and believe me it was much cheaper than cable! By the way, I am disabled and I have had 45 surgeries and because I have thousands in medical bills I can not afford to stay at home so my husband and I started our own business years ago. So I work and I work 10 hour days. I will have many more surgeries until I die and I know that is my life and I move on. I volunteer with abused children in Nashville and I love it. It is time you find something to help someone else out and truly you will stop demanding things and finding yourself grateful for what you have and what you can afford. By the way I lived without any cable for years. Did I like it, no, but it is what I could afford. However, it would have never crossed my mind to demand that Comcast give me cable or drop their rates. I made what I made then and I lived within my means. Try it and oh, see what you can do for someone else today. Try it just once and see how it feels. It feels inspiring! You have a computer and like many people before me said many tv shows are now on the computer, check those out. Many gave good options, so re read them and try them. I also run a online board group for people with disablities, why don't you try running one of your own and help someone that way. There are things you can do. It truly will be a life changing experience! Make no mistake I am not dissing your disablity because I have typed this with one arm, so i know how hard it is, however, there are things you can do if you force yourself. Once you do, it is not that hard to keep going. A person sometimes has to just "do it" and then do it again and again and before you know it.........you are helping others. I think you need to focus on that and stop focusing on you. It is not your best attribrute. Open your window and see that beautiful sky. Try writing about it. Do something to be thankful for, just for today.

I'd like a $31,000 Hasselblad camera and digital back system. Maybe they can lower the price for me since I can't afford it? Or maybe a $5,000 Nikon D3 or a $7,500 Canon 1DS MKIII? After all, it is a necessity for me since I am a photographer. Social responsibility and all that. Cable television is a luxury item. I am not aware of a single medical condition that requires one to have cable television. Can you help us out and explain this to us? The line about doing away with necessities in order to have cable tv worries me. Television is not that important. This is not a ripoff, you just don't want to pay the price that others pay for the service.

Disabled or not. Everyone must live within income limits

Having a disability or not has nothing to do with a company, any company for charging a fee for its service. There was a time when I was on disability and I did not expect to get something reduced because of it. If I couldn't afford something I did without. With your income cable TV, the internet, and other non-essential products or services should be the least of your worries. Several posters have suggested the library. I would also like to suggest you apply for some student loans and better yourself by giving up the cable TV and replace it with education. Depending on the education you seek the payment on a student loan may be about the same as a monthly cable bill. You may also be able to get grants for education due to a disability. Many colleges offer online classes as well which would reduce the amount of travel needed to complete a degree. By getting higher education you will better yourself and become more employable even if it is for a part time position. Prior to returning to the work force I was on full social security disability but wanted something better for myself and my family and went back to college using student loans and grants available. I graduated with an Associate degree in Business and building off of previous work experience and my education went back to work full time. When I was on Social Security I was receiving the maximum benefit amount. Let me tell you, after taxes, medical deductions and a percentage for my 401K I am bringin home more than Social Security could ever hope to provide. A disability does not mean you cannot better yourself you just might have to go about it in a different way and within your limitations. Having said all that, don't expect people or companies to make adjustments for you, go out and make adjustments to yourself.

Social Responsibility

My complaint is that Comcast has no social responsibility when they increase prices across the board. They are ripping us off by increasing prices arbitrarily. Monopolies enjoy that luxury. There are laws that accommodate the physically disabled, as well as those who are mentally disabled, to make life easier for them when to just want to live is sometimes a huge struggle. The basis of these laws is social responsibility and compassion. I only mentioned my disability to express a dire need for basic cable. The average person may not need it as much as I do. My point is that there are many low-income people who are hurt by Comcast's price increases. Again, low-income people make up a good number of Comcast's customer base. But they couldn't care less about that. Now, I expect responses from those who will suggest I see a doctor when there is no treatment for my disability, or who will suggest I buy a car to go to the library.

The price...

is what it is. If you think it's a good value for the product and you can afford it, then continue your service. if it's not acceptable as a value or you can not afford it, then cancel your service. This works for everyone. Your disability has no relevance to the situation except you mention it with the insinuation that you should receive price breaks because of it. Sorry, doesn't work that way.

Those of us with disabilities become accustomed to unkind comments by those who appear to be resentful because they have to work for a living. I would challenge anyone with a '9 to 5' to walk in my shoes for just one month, and not come away from the experience not desperately wanting to return to their job. I do appreciate the comments by those who are interested in, and who respond to the issue with the Comcast that I addressed. My ripoff report is meant to validate and summarize the many reports that have been posted at Rip Off Reports, from the point of view of someone who, to be able to pay Comcast, does without what others might see as neccesities. I got the notice in the mail today from Comcast announcing their price increase. Their monopolistic increases charged to everyone, and especially to their low-income customers, is unconsciable.

Based on your current income, cable is a luxury that you simply can't afford right now. If you're looking for inexpensive entertainment, then visiting your local library would be a good choice. In addition to all of the books, a lot of libraries have movies and CDs that you can borrow too. Also, since you obviously have internet access, then you can watch a lot of TV shows online for free. Cable TV is a nice distraction, but you don't really need it.

So ......NOW because you're disabled you should .......what? get your freakin cable FREE?? Or reduced?????? OMG Im not sure I just read this correctly. Ya know what Justice.......Im "considered" disabled too.......but I work FULLfreakintime to afford myself the LUXURIES I want and "need"....like cable TV.......the Internet etc. NO I dont like the prices for it......none of it......I think it should all be free but WTF.......that aint gonna happen either. I understand being disabled and on a limited fixed income..........what I dont understand NOW nor will I EVER.......is expecting something for free or a reduced rate just because you're disabled. In fact......it angers me that people EXPECT special EVERYdamnthing because they are disabled.

I am sorry for any condition that you may have. However, as far as I am aware there is no medical condition that REQUIRES you to have a wide selection of channels on your TV? You have options. There is not only Cable TV, you can get the Limited Basic or Antena TV for lower cost. Then for your variety you can read books. Going to your local library you can borrow those for free. But you also have access to a computer. There are several Social Networking sites that you can be on. You may even find other people in your same situation that you can get support on. Not only that but several TV shows are now even putting their episodes on-line where they can be viewed for free.

What did Comcast do?

#34Consumer Comment

How did Comcast rip you off? Is it because they charge $60 a month? Cable TV is not an essential service. It is a premium service. I have trouble accepting that you must have cable tv. I don't have it, don't want it and certainly don't need it. I am certain you can get by on local tv and radio.
