I personally have no trouble with the concept of hanging up on unproductive conversations. If I am being harrassed, called names, and belittled, I will hang up and I will not feel ashamed about it. I am not obligated by federal or consumer law in dealing with creditors or debt collectors to endure even a minute of abusive and harrassing behavior. I am not obligated to listen to put downs, being called white trash or dead beat or loser or s**t or anything. Once the person at the other end gets personal and starts naming names, the conversation from a business standpoint becomes unproductive. Continuing with such a conversation is not in your best interest. I would hang up like you did. And I would just document the time and place the call occurred, the name the agent and what was said and if we ever have to go to arbitration or court, it will be on record. Don't despair. They cannot ruin your life forever.
