I recently applied to COuntrywide HOme Lenders to refinance and get an additional $40,000.00 for an addition to our home. The representative I dealt with was polite enough. However, the appraisal process seemed to be where my trouble began. They sent Landsafe Appraisal Services to my house. The guy was here maybe five minutes, never measured anything, took some photos, and left as quickly as he came. This was wierd as my last appraisal two years earlier took an hour with two people showing up and I watched them carefully measuring and taking notes. That appraisal came out at $245,000.00.

Two weeks passed after my appraisal and I heard nothing. Several calls were made to George T., my Rep. When he finally returned my call, he said that the reports (appraisals) were being held up, and that the company was considering scrapping the appraisals done. Then he said mine was probably in that pile and was most likely just stuck on someone's desk, and I should not worry. Well, I did. And rightly so.

Another week went with no word. I finally got George on the phone. He told me that my appraisal came in too low. That was it. No options or anything. I asked how much, and he said it came in at $195,000.00. I asked how that was possible when two years ago it was $40,000.00 more. I asked for a copy, which be did fax me, poor quality for my $400 bucks. I saw plenty of errors. Plus, the comps they used in the report were of houses that were mostly two beds, little or no acreage, nothing like ours.

But that is not where I really get mad. I just found out tonight that Countrywide actually ownes Landsafe, the company they sent to my house. This is fraud as far as I am concerned. They never informed me they owned this company and never gave me the option to use a local appraisal service. Real Estate is still selling strong in my Town due to only 3% land available for development. How can a home go down $40k in just one year? I smell a scam here. I want my $400.00 back!
