Data Recovery Services shows offices that are nationwide, but we kept getting routed to a Russian couple that appear to be operating out of a house in Grapevine, Texas. Our server went down and we went to them for data recovery without knowing they were a fraudulent business. My tech guy found them and I just went forward thinking things were fine.
They looked at our data and told us it would cost $5000 to fix, then upcharged us to $6600. 2 week later they came back and were asking from anywhere between $12,000 and $25,000 for us to get our data. We asked for diagnostics or reports to show that anything had been done or to prove their assumptions. The simply took a screenshot of the rebuilt volume. And we said that wasn't proof of any work or a diagnostic report.
At that point we asked for the hard drives back and that's where the stalling began. Today they missed another deadline they set for returning the drives and we are now working with the Seattle police. Next step will be the AG's office and assessing our legal options.
This is a report we found on a very similarly named company that's probably operated by the same folks:
