The middle of April I noticed a deduction on my ATM card for 5000FreeMinutes, for $61.02. I didn't understand it at the time, but we had just opened another cell phone account and I thought, perhaps, it was in conjuction with that purchase.

The beginning of May there was another deduction for $61.02 from Direct One LLC. That day I called my bank, BofA, and reported that I believed I was a victim of fraud. At their suggestion I immediately cancelled my ATM card and ordered a new one. BofA stood behind this customer, and the amount of both deductions was back in my account within 24 hours of my report. After I had made sure no more unauthorized deductions could be made, I then tried to contact this company...Hah! Numbers were no longer valid, phone was not answered, etc..

At this point I have decided to let BofA handle further contacts, and filled out appropriate paperwork to let them do so. After hearing some of the stories about trying to get credit back on a credit card, and trying for months, I was fortunate that I used my ATM card on an account that typically, has a small balance. That's why I use it, so that I don't endanger my credit card or funds.

I wish everyone luck with these criminals!

How Direct One Did It

#2Consumer Suggestion

Tue, May 27, 2003

After being charged twice for the same amount, neither of which I authorized, I went back in great detail through my bank statements. I believe that Direct One LLC was able to obtain my ATM account numbers when I purchased two pieces of software from a company called GrapeApe.com. One of their pop-unders came on the screen and when I tried to exit it, it took me to the 5000FreeMinutes site, which I did exit, but by that time it already had my data. Today I tried to access GrapeApe, only to find that their web site is not available. I am not saying that GrapeApe was the connection, but it does seem highly unusual.
