Problem #1. I phoned DirecTV on June 10, 2009 to cancel the account I had held with them since 1998. I was told there would be a cancellation fee of $140.00. When I asked what the cancellation fee was for, I was told the fee was being charged because I had asked that a defective receiver be replaced a year earlier.

I was further informed that this receiver exchange request further triggered an 18 month renewal of my contract. This information was never disclosed to me at the time, nor, did I ever sign anything to that effect.

Problem #2. I am also being billed $37.96 for some Pay-Per-View events that they found on my returned receiver card. DirecTV says the events occurred in 2005.

When I explained that they had sent me new cards in 2006 and that my receiver was never hooked up to a phone, nor did they have any record of me ever ordering PPV. they said "too bad, you still owe us". The only way these events could have been logged is that DirecTV is using a form of 'phishing', i.e., turning on PPV channels at random, then, when someone inadvertently pushes, for example 595 on the remote (an adult channel) instead of 295, the event gets logged. This can easily occur as the '2' is just above the '5' on the remote keypad.

After searching various other consumer sites, this practice seems to be fairly common. DirecTV is leaving themselves wide open for some enterprising attorney to file a class action lawsuit on this practice.

there has been many false payperview charges this is a directv scam! i cancelled them because i got sick of thier crap and also i had owned 2 of my 4 recievers(yes bak in the day when the had access card 1 and the football player cards you could own them) later they started charging me the same lease fee they charged for leased boxes for my boxes i actually owned go figure!

here is what to do: i had to send them back 2 leased boxes and the 2 access cards in the leased boxes and i was afraid they would pull this crap so I placed my cards on the pad at a local department store (donot place atm credit cards demagnitze pad) then i went home and i took a empty jar (spaggetti sauce) filled it with water and i soaked the cards for 7 days in water and used a hobby/craft razor and put a slice in the smart chip on the card then i sent it back to them!

I was positive there was no way to read the cards!

also beware of responses ashley (springfield) and karl (cut and paste troll)

they are both ror trolls who absolutly add no value to this site!

It's difficult to order a PPV by accidentally entering the wrong channel because they system requires you to confirm the purchase after you've punched in the channel number. What is more likely is that when Directv sent you new cards in 2006, they were recycled from a previous customer. Customers that have PPV can order a certain amount of PPV (I think it was around $50) even when the phone line is not active. These transactions are stored on the card until the unit is able to dial home. It's possible that the PPV transactions were already on the card when they sent them to you. This happened to me once when directv sent me a new (actually used) card. Normally, this should be very easy to rectify. Directv would have a record of sending you the new card in 2006, so they would have to know that those transactions were made before the card was in your possesion. The problem is that trying to make their brain dead customer service reps understand this is like teaching quantum physics to a slug.

How am I advocating for Directv? The OP wanted to know where he signed a contract, and I advised him of where to look. After all these stories I've read on directv, they couldn't pay me to take it.

We were customers of Direct for over 10 years. We never loved the service, but we stuck with it since it was our only option if we wanted ANY tv reception. Four years before we upgraded to the DVR service. The installer was extremely nice, and did a a+ job. When he handed us the paperwork to sign we refused to sign the contract, and after a hour on and off the phone Direct waved the contract and we signed nothing. Two years go by and the DVR starts dumping some of our shows without warning. For the record, I am 100% sure it was a fault of the equipment, not how I had the software configured. So they sent us another box, for free - with we also NEVER signed a contract for, and it was FAR WORSE. It just ate shows at random. So we sent the new box back and lived with the old one. Then we get the next phone bill (it was a bundle deal) and found nearly a 500$ fee for the box! We spent months trying to prove we sent the darn box back. Finally by dumb luck we got some guy at Direct who I believe must have marched down to the warehouse and 'found' our missing box. Nearly two more years pass, and we decided to dump Direct for free digital tv, and found out that we are still under a contract for the 'new' box they sent us. rather fight over a contract we never signed for - TWICE, we decided to wait it out. We did, and now we are FREEEEeeeeeeeeeeee.

Ashley Is a business advocate, she defends these scum businesses who take advantage of us. Well If businesses don't honor what they say, why should we have to keep a contract with them. But ashley doesn't seem to understand that.

Where they get you is on the installer's paperwork. When the installer came to your house, he had you sign paperwork after the installation of the new reciever. The agreement to a contract extension is on there. Check that paperwork if you still have it. Additionally, make sure you get your equipment back to the ASAP after cancelling or they will bill it to your checking account.

sound like a good idea about the pushing the wrong button on the remote . but in order for that to work the phone line would have to be connected. trons do magically make it from the receiver to directv computers. when they came out to replace the receiver did you sign a workorder. doesnt matter how many idiot test they make the installer take and pay for. honesty should be part of the installers job. they should let the customer know when they are signing a workorder or a contract. also the customer as to start reading what ever is put in front of them. before they go and sign the paperwork. i dont know if you had signed anything and if you didnt sign any paperwork. i would ask them for the copy with your signature on it . if you did sign it and didnt read it. you learned a lesson. but if you didnt sign anything. take it up with the attorney generals office.
