In July 2006, I ordered DirecTV for two televisions in my household. At the time, we had a 3rd television; however, we decided not to order a DirecTV receiver for it because we were planning on replacing the 3rd television soon.
I had previously been a DirecTV subscriber from 1998 to 2004 when I switched to Dish Network. There were a few channels that DirecTV offered that Dish didn't, so I finally decided to switch back. Upon re-subscribing, I was told that I would have to maintain a one year commitment, which I agreed to.
In February of 2007, we finally got a new 3rd Television, and I promptly called DirecTV to add a standard receiver for my new television. I was told that I would have to pay an additional monthly equipment fee, which I expected; however, the CSR made no mention of any contract extensions at the time of our conversation, and I was led to believe my commitment would expire in July 2007 (1 year).
Then in July of 2007, I was thinking of switching over to FIOS-TV, since I had recently had FIOS installed. I called DirecTV to cancel, believing I had fulfilled my 12 month commitment.... I was shocked to find out that they had automatically extended my contract for another 12 months from the time I added my 3rd receiver. I was very upset and let them know that I felt deceived and that they should make it clear that ANY changes to your subscription will automatically extend your commitment! I even explained that on their website, they only mention "activation of new service" as a condition for a commitment. They were very unapologetic and told me there's nothing I can do.
I have been very careful not to make any changes to my services, and I will attempt to cancel once again in February 2008. After finding this site and reading all the horror stories about DirecTV, I fear that they will once again attempt to extend my commitment.
